PLANET OF THE APES television music comes to CD

Date: Tuesday, September 20, 2005

INTRADA Announce its Special Collection Vol. 25: the first-ever soundtrack CD release of Lalo Schifrin's music for the PLANET OF THE APES television series. In addition to Schifrin's title and episode music, the release also includes Earle Hagen's music from the episode "The Legacy."

On September 13, 1974, the PLANET OF THE APES TV series was launched as a follow on to the hit series of theatrical films. The program's run was a short one, with the last episode airing a mere 3 months later. The series starred Ron Harper and James Naughton as the marooned astronauts, with Roddy McDowall providing continuity between the films and the TV series.

For the TV show, music supervisor Lionel Newman brought in Lalo Schifrin as the primary composer, who ran with Jerry Goldsmith's aggressive, primal approach from the first film. Schifrin scored the main title, as well as the episodes "Escape from Tomorrow," "Gladiators," and "The Good Seeds," and this CD release features all of Schifrin's episodes. Additionally, Earle Hagen's score for "The Legacy" is included. Liner notes are by Eric Greene, author of "Planet of the Apes as American Myth: Race, Politics and Popular Culture."

This edition is limited to 3000 copies and will be released next month.

I remember this TV series when it first aired... it's sad, but you can actually buy this series on DVD.

The major letdown of this series is that there was no hot babe wearing next to nothing (ala Nova). Sure, the plots were weak, the action thin, etc., etc., but if there were some smokin' babes running around each week, we wouldn't have minded so much.

Was there a huge outcry for this?

Of course there was. Where were you? Stranded on a desert island or something?

fritzlee, good call... no hot chicks in bad skins definately lead to the demise of this show.

Well, a lot of things lead to the demise of this show, but I am surprised that they didn't have a hot-as-all-hell regular female cast member. Seeing as how the target audience for this show was clearly young males, how many times did they expect us to tune into Roddy McDowell in a chimp outfit and two hairy guys running around a beach?
