PlayStation 3 Price and Release Date Announced!

By: Karl Schneider
Date: Tuesday, May 09, 2006
Source: Sony

Details regarding the PS3 launch were released at E3 last night. Similar to Xbox 360, The PS3 will be available in two different hard drive sizes: 20GB and 60GB.

PS3 will hit stores in North America, Europe, and Australia on November 17, 2006. The system will release in Japan six days earlier. Sony plans to release 2 million PS3s during the initial launch phase, another 2 million before the end of 2006 and another 2 million before March 31, 2007.

The PS3 controller also made an appearance. Say bye bye to the crazy design, instead the controller is very very similar to the PS2 Dual-Shock with the only noticeable differences being the incorporation of a 6-degree tilt-sensitive feature and the removal of the vibration. The L2/R2 buttons have also been enlarged, analogue sticks allow for more tilting, and there is increased precision for all buttons.

That's the good news.

The price?

$499 dollars for the 20 gig version. $599 dollars for the 60 gig version.

Start saving.

Yay! Now when the PS3 comes out, I can finally buy it- once I can gather the scratch needed to actually buy it.

Thats actually not too bad on the price...The rumour mill had it set a lot higher, like 799 or 899. Not that I would get it anyways. I'm an PC and x-box fan!

has anyone heard about the processing power compared to the Xbox 360? How are the graphics supposed to compare to the 360 too?

One thing that I have heard about this is that it will come with an HD-DVD player? Blu-Ray? That's Sony's version, right?

From what I've read, there's not going to be a huge difference between the two systems. The PS3 might have an edge, but if so, it isn't going to be too significant. I would imagine that for the most part, it will be awhile before you start seeing true next-gen games on either system.

Thats a freaking AWESOME Price!!!! Guys this thing is coming with a blu-ray DVD player built in which by its self is around $800 for the cheapest one. It's twice as powerfull as the x-box 360, has a better graphics card, and more support from 3rd party companies. I work in the game industry as an artist and I can tell you right now. Studios are already fed up with 360. They call it the "Microsoft Baby-Step". I'll probably buy both just in case but I have a feeling Microsoft is going down.

Did they just say the controller doesnt have the Vibration function anymore? Whats with that?

scrapsca, you're an idiot. The 360 is universally praised for both its power and its ease of development. Meanwhile, the PS3 doesn't offer any signifigant muscle over it while also being much harder to program for. Stop being a fanboy and step into the light of truth.

Oh, and as for "Did they just say the controller doesnt have the Vibration function anymore? Whats with that?" You obviously do NOT work in the industry if you don't know the reason for that.

By "working in the industry" he means that he works at Best Buy.

• May 09, 2006, 10:41am •
scifiwriter... what is the reason for not having the vibration function?

karlschneider • May 09, 2006, 10:59am •
There is no more vibration because it would interfere with the tilting mechanism. Vibration is said to be a last generation feature.
