What They Say
Mokuren's perspective on the moon base tragedy is vastly different from Shion's. Though she seems to be an ethereal goddess, she has her own insecurities and frustrations. She's troubled by her lack of female friends and aggravated by men who are only interested in the rarity and celebrity of her Kiche, the mystical mark of their god, Sarjalim.

When she learns of the opportunity to join the research team on the KK moon base, she eagerly applies for the position, over the protest of Lim Lians. Her wish to join good-looking men on the team is fulfilled when she meets handsome Gyokuran and Shion - but will either one quench her desires?

The Review
Continuing the tale that dominated the previous volume, we're again thrust into the past-life that focuses upon Mokuren. Much as we've spent a good deal of time learning about Shion's past, we see the events that led up to Mokuren coming to KK and the ordeals she had to go through as a Kiches. Understanding what a Kiches is would be fascinating enough but with Mokuren, we see it as someone who really doesn't want to be one and struggles against the restraints that are placed on those who are born that way. For her it continues to be even worse since such great things are expected of her because of her parents.

Mokuren's sense of alienation hasn't changed much since she's gained the ability to go out into the world a bit more but it is mitigated by the fact that she's now a star in a sense because of her singing. She's performed in a number of very high profile ceremonies, far more than any Kiches has in the past, and those in power see great things ahead for her. But in the back of her mind, she's still intent on finding out more about that sister soul she believes is the planet KK. As luck would have it, the entire research team there has been turned over and she now has a chance, if the elders allow it, to seize her dream and become a part of the new research team. Since she's become more "socialized" in the last couple of years and because of the future that the elder does see for her, she's allowed to make that gamble and become a member of the team.

It's at this point that the book gets even more fascinating as we now see the story growing from the teams arrival on KK from a different angle. Having seen it from Shion's perspective as well as the others in the present day talking about their experiences, this new facet doesn't provide any really big new revelations. What it does provide is a few new wrinkles to the interactions between the team members and a greater understanding of why Mokuren is doing what she does. Seeing things from her perspective when it comes to the interpersonal relationships and her desire to be friendly with Shion is a lot of fun.

Hiwatari's artwork continues to be extremely enjoyable here as I love her designs and the flowing nature of the backgrounds. There's a certain softness to her style that is very appealing and it fits in perfectly with the kind of story being told on her homeworld. Hiwatari's quarter columns for this volume continue what she was discussing in the previous volume about dieting and it's amusing to see her getting so many varied opinions from her own and that she's taking them in. Thankfully she does shift to a new topic about halfway through this volume and hopefully she'll get back to talking a bit more about her material in the future.
