Mania Box Office Report: You Shall Not Pass!

Hobbit Wins final Weekend!

By Robert T. Trate     December 30, 2012
Source: Box Office Mojo

Okay so I am stealing a line from what will one day be episode four of Tolkien’s movie universe, but it works. It really was a mad dash until the end of the year. I am still trying to get in a second screening of the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey but I had to see Django Unchained and Les Miserables. I also have this DVD sitting here called Big Tit Zombies just begging to screened. Not to mention Hyde Park on Hudson, Hitchcock, and Zero Dark Thirty are finally starting to arrive at the regular theaters. Where does one find the time?

The Hobbit, his Wizard, and all those Dwarves won the last box office weekend of the year. Ray Subers of Box Office Mojo had this to report: “On the last weekend of 2012, audiences crowded in to theaters to see three very different movies: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey managed to take the top spot for the third weekend in a row, though Django Unchained and Les Miserables also tallied impressive numbers. The Top 12 wound up earning an estimated $167.8 million, which helped push overall 2012 domestic box office to just under $10.8 billion (a new record).

The Hobbit dipped 11 percent to an estimated $32.9 million. The movie has been holding well over the past week (noticeably better than I Am Legend over the same period in 2007), and $300 million seems like it could be in play again. Through 17 days, the first of three Lord of the Rings prequels has grossed $222.7 million, which is in between Fellowship of the Ring ($189.3 million) and The Two Towers ($243.6 million). Read the full report

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Django Unchained

Les Miserables (2012)

Parental Guidance

Jack Reacher

This is 40

The Guilt Trip

Monsters, Inc. (3D)

Rise of the Guardians

Box Office Mojo also reported that Skyfall has reached the 1 billion dollar mark world wide (officially $1,000, 200,000). Which places it directly behind the The Dark Knight and in front of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. What is still number one? James Cameron’s Avatar of course.

This week the genre fare is a tad light with Texas Chainsaw 3D. Warm Bodies, A Good Day to Die Hard, and Oz the Great and Powerful cannot get here soon enough.

Big Tit Zombies? Really Bob? I thought you were into the more highbrow stuff...tsk tsk tsk. Btw where can I get a copy of that?

Glad to see The Hobbit jump back to first after it was ran over during X-Mas day. 300mil or bust

Les Miserables, excellent film. Made me cry almost as much as The Joy Luck Club

Django excellent as well but my expectations may have been too high so it felt like a bit of a letdown. Will check it out again as most of QT's films need several viewings IMO. Talking about it last couple of days makes me feel like I'll enjoy it more the second time around. SLJ really stole the show for me

Silver Linings Playbook what a nice romantic comedy drama. Pleasantly surprised by this. I used to hate Bradley Cooper going back to Alias but I've done almost a complete 180 on him. He was great. And Jennifer Lawrence has a kicking body OMG

Cirque Du Soleil it was cool watching it in 3D but still it's like watching acrobats performing all these amazing feats on the screen just isn't the same as watching it live. The danger and ingenuity don't translate too well

Looking forward to more Leatherface next weekend may check out This is 40

I'd like to think that if the Hobbit hits 300M, it's a sign that audiences can maintain focus on a longer, character driven film.

I'd like to.

Wise,  I'd pass on This Is 40 yo. I saw it, liked it, enjoyed it more than Apatow's last flick but I think I wouldve enjoyed it more if I had kids or was 40.  Id wait for video.

Caught The Hobbit on HFR, It looked nice dont know what the fuzz is about.  Flick waznt as good as the originals but still pretty good. Goblin King had balls on his face and the brown wizard looked like someone came on his face.  Also, I hate Gandalf though.  Dude is the worst wizard ever.  Use some damn magic. Im rewatching the trilogy again and the mofo barely uses magic. Lotr wizards are bitches.

finally caught Flight which I thought was really good too.

Up next is Lincoln and then hopefully I can move to Django, Les, and Zero.

Oh, and lets go Redskins!

Hanso- I'm sure this wont change ur opinion of the LOTR wizards, but from my understanding, they have limited amount of power/ magic to use at a time. Sort of how we have a limited amount of sperm and can only cum so many times in a day.

Hanso, it's been too long since I've read the novels but I recall among one of the documentaries on one of the 4-disc dvd sets Peter Jackson stating that he disliked wizards conducting magic through shooting lightning bolts or fireballs or other obvious magical attacks.  I know, I know, it's bizzare to say the least, although PJ is certainly entitled to his likes and preferences but IMO he's very narrowminded and he's denying what could've been some awesome magical battle scenes.

keithdaniel 12/30/2012 9:20:22 PM

I would also like to mention that Gandalf doesn't seem to have that much magic in his bag of tricks so to speak so I understand where some of the criticism is coming from.  For example, in The Return of the King, Gandalf's confrontation with the Witch King didn't last long and led to Gandalf being disarmed with his staff being destroyed fairly quickly.

hanso 12/30/2012 9:22:58 PM

Violator, in the Two Towers, Gandalf tells Aragorn to look for him on the 5th day.  The 5th day comes when Helm's Deep is getting attacked, and Gandalf shows up riding a horse and rides to battle.  A horse!?  How bout he shows up shooting lightning out of his ass or something.  When he fights the Balrog in Fellowship his only magic can do is knock the floor down.  Put a Patronus spell on that Balrog Gandalf u bitch.  Also if he could fly or do some levitation spells he would've escaped when Saruman trapped him in the tower.  Instead he has to call animals to save his ass.

in the Hobbit he can only muster enough magic to light a damn acorn on fire.  He can't even light up multiple ones, he has to use the one he already lit up to light up the rest.  Gandalf is trash.  Tony Romo > Gandalf's magic.

Keith, that is bizzarre.
