Pokemon Vol. #01 (Brazil)
September 14, 2003
What They Say
This is the Brazillian release. The Review!
At last, the first Brazilian anime DVD. Or should I say the first Pokémon DVD to be released on Brazil? It's a fact that Pokémon, like Akira, lives on it's own, as stand out products that will sell very well for the general market. For the anime community, it's not great news that this title gets to be released, as the target market surely are not the anime fans. Anyway, it's anime, so it deserves a review. Also, the disc is region 0, so any worldwide importer can get this disc with no problems.
Surprisingly enough, Paris Films compiled the first nine TV episodes on a dual-layered disc and released them on a very affordable price. While the episode count is high, it's not much of a problem, as the show is mostly solid bright colors, and the compression can deal with it at very low bitrates.
The audio is available only on Portuguese (which poses a problem for the rest of South America), and is very straightforward, with most of the action on the center channel, and one or other stereo sound effect.
Extras are consistent on this one, with a memory game (DVD Rom only) and a selection of cards showing each Pokémon (the standard Nintendo Pokémon guide). The disc features chapter selection and runs for a considerable time, so you probably won't take it at once.
If you want to own some Pokémon episodes, this disc offers an affordable option, at a lower price than the individual VHS releases.
