What They Say
Ash is trying for the Marsh Badge, but ghost Pokemon are Ash's only hope for defeating Sabrina! Unfortunately, that means that Ash has to convince a free-spirited and practical joke-loving Haunter Pokemon to help. Will the joke be on Ash? Plus, Ash comes face ot face with a fighting Pokenmon with an attitude problem--Mankey! Will Ash ever get his hat back or will his problems evolve into something bigger? Season One, Episodes 22-24.

The Review!
Another Badge is in Ash?s sight in this volume, and maybe he can increase his Pokémon count as well.

Audio:

4Kids provides a simple English stereo language mix for the DVD. There is no directionality and all sound it directed to the front sound stage. Sound effects and dialogue are clear and distortion free.

Video:

Again, the video quality for this volume of Pokémon is pretty good. No problems were introduced during the mpeg encoding, so no line shimmering or cross coloration is present. The video brightness seems to vary throughout the episodes, as 4Kids plays with the brightness levels to make sure they don?t cause any seizures.

Packaging:

Ash, Misty, Pikachu, and Primeape get the front cover for Primeape Problems. The Primeape looks to be after Ash, Pikachu, and Misty in a canyon area. Primeape with his Mankey form is definitely the focus as he gets the back cover as well with him beating up Team Rocket against another canyon background. There?s also a one line episode description of each show.

Menu:

The same familiar menu consists of just a chapter selection scene where you can select an episode, the opening, or the ending.

Extras:

The only extra is a Pokémon mini comic.

Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers)

Prepare for a little bit of comedy, as some ghosts try out a few routines on our friends.

In order to find a Ghost Pokémon in order to defeat Sabrina, the group heads to Lavender Town and the Tower of Terror. All the ghost in the town live in the tower, but when they reach the tower, neither Brock, Misty, or Pikachu want to help Ash in the tower. Finally, they all go inside and encounter a bunch of ghostly Pokémon who seems to like nothing better than to play practical jokes on people and scare them. Ash gets the chance to even have an otherworldly experience while in the tower. In typical Ash manner though, he makes friends with the Ghost Pokémon in the tower, and one of them joins him to help defeat Sabrina.

Haunter Versus Kadabra pits a ghost against a psychic as Ash returns to try to get the Marsh Badge from Sabrina. Sabrina sets up the same conditions in case Ash loses, but Haunter turns into a no show for the match. Everyone tries to escape, but Sabrina turns Brock and Misty into dolls! Ash searches the town for Haunter, and finds him playing with Team Rocket. Finally, Ash gets Haunter to accompany him to battle Sabrina, and the battle ends up completely different than what you might expect.

Primeape Goes Bananas starts with Ash reporting to Professor Oak on his progress, but Ash learns that all the other trainers from Pallet Town already have five badges and have passed through Celadon City, which is Ash?s next destination. Disheartened, he continues on with a vow to capture a few more Pokémon on the way to beef up his arsenal. They encounter a Mankey, a fighting type Pokémon which Ash lacks. When Ash tries to capture it though, they anger the Mankey, which begins to chase them and steals Ash?s hat. Ash spends his time trying to get his hat back and making sure Mankey, which evolves into Primeape, doesn?t beat him into a pulp.

All right, Ash gets another gym badge, and is able to help a girl recover her humanity through laughter here. Laughter is always the best medicine. And now that Ash has another Pokémon, he?s ready for even more challenges ahead. The episodes featuring Haunter are really hilarious. Definitely a great volume to get.
