The horror classic just celebrated its 25th anniversary, getting a limited re-release in theaters and a new DVD release. At the same time this celebration was happening, there have been rumors that someone inside Hollywood wanted to remake it. Until now, we didn't know who wanted the rights for this remake. The horror fans over at Bloody Disgusting are now reporting that Mandate Pictures, recently merged within Lionsgate, are the ones seeking the rights to the POLTEGEIST production.

The original, written by Spielberg and directed by Tobe Hooper, opened in 890 theaters on June 6, 1982. The film would go on to gross 74.6 mil over a 6 month theatrical release with a budget of only 10.7 mil.

TO HELL WITH REMAKES.... DAMN HOLLYWOOD AND IT'S LACK OF ORIGINALITY!!! I WILL RAIN A TERRIBLE VENGEANCE UPON THEM.... THERE WILL BE A RECKONING!!!........ RECKONING!!!!
There, I said it for everyone... so spare us the torture... I was actually sitting with my younger cousin last week... he is fifteen and loves horror films and ya know, he really summed this whole debate up for me. He said basically said that the reason remakes keep getting made is because "shocker" they keep making money... his generation has never seen a lot of the old ones, and when they try to rent one, they are just too dated by todays standards... special effects suck, sometimes acting sucks... so he and his little attention span friends like the updates with a more modern feel and top notch production values.... we are clinging to the past... Now don't get me wrong, a lot of these puppies suck, but you take any of the really bad remakes and think about the actors and directors involved, and you'll see that they were doomed original concept or retread... I don't say stop remakes, I say MAKE GOOD REMAKES!!!! Look at Dawn of the Dead, 3:10 to Yuma, Disturbia, The Amittyville Horror (I thought it was fun), King Kong, The Hills have Eyes... man they all brought something fresh to the table, people just hate on them because it's the thing to do.
Anywho... this movie scared the bejezus out of me when I was a kid, and you know, in my opinion it's ripe for a remake... introduce it a new audience... but get the right writer and director, and get it right... OR THERE WILL BE A RECKONING!!!!..... REEEECKOOOONIIIIING!!!!!

Stop it. Just stop it already. Why do these people feel the need to re-shoot everything. Don't the realize that they are just insulting the greatness of the originals by trying to remake it. Hollywood is out of ideas, we get it, but there are just some properties that shouldn't be touched.

I agree with all you guys. I'm not complaining. I just think it's a mistake to remake these movies. I also think they should make good remakes. But all the complaining won't make it stop. We can either put up, shut up, or keep on complaining. I'm sure some of you will choose the latter.

I don't mind remakes at all. I just think it is still too early for this remake. This movie is still fresh in most people's memories. That is unless you make a lot of changes, but then that wouldn't be a remake that would be a cheap knock-off.

Quick! Please rush production of this movie so, in a few years, someone can remake the remake. And then, if we're super lucky, someone will remake the remake to the remake.

Seriously, though, the scene with the crawling pork chop and subsequent face washing scene scared the carp out of me in my younger days...and if you've ever had the carp scared out of you, you know how painful that can be.

It was the clown that scared the crap outta. It was that clown compounded with Tim Curry's Pennywise from "IT" and to this day whenever I see a clown, I pee in my pants a little bit. I totally agree with Wiseguy562 when he says it's too soon for a remake of this film.

Hey Jarrod, Any chance of you saying something else besides "Remake"? Some of us get tired of reading all of the complaints about remakes. Maybe call them ... I don't know... "Revisions”. I think that might spark some thought provoking conversations instead of the normal "Stop the remakes please or Hollywood is out of stories or ideas."

BTW. I agree 100% with what madmanic999 said.

I don't even know what to say. Now Spielberg is remaking his own productions? I guess in a few years he'll be "re-imaging" Close Encounters. Why? Not because it needs to be done or that some writer or director comes to him with a new idea about it that burns in him to be expressed and it will be unique and original. No it'll be re-made because its name recognition will be easy money.
Sad to see A great one like Spielberg go down this route.
