Mais qui percera le secret de sa métamorphose?
Yes it's French and that's what's written on the box, so let's sum it up in English: Between the two world wars, somewhere in Italy, an outsanding pilot is victim of an awful spell. He becomes a bounty hunter and sets up on a desert island in the Adriatic. Called Porco Rosso by his enemies, the air pirates and all kinds of thieves, he challenges the best pilots to a duel onboard his splendid red hydroplane. He flies to the weak's assistance and one day he found love. But who will know the secret of his metamorphosis?

The Review!
That's the first anime on DVD in zone 2 and it's Ghibli, even better, it's Miyazaki.

The Audio on the disc is fantastic from a French point of view since we benefit from an awesome 5.1 remastered soundtrack in French. It's wonderful especially for the music and the planes' moves but the shots are too weak: not enough LFE and sound too low. But there is no DD5.1 for the Japanese audio track and it hasn't been remastered so it's not crystal clear like the French version. The Portuguese 1.0 is welcome... if you understand Portuguese. Sorry pals no English track here, they probably don't have the rights or any interest in it.

The Video is clean and almost perfect, it's not exactly as good as Pioneer but it's really good, no artifacts and wonderful colors, they have had an excellent master.

The Packaging is classic, the cover is beautiful but nothing really exiting inside except the disc itself. Actually a nice box.

The Menu on the disc is excellent and replies quickly, the chapter selection is marvelous, with animated sequences. The menu itself is very well down with images from the film in the background and a beautiful music playing in loop, Canal + made a terrific job. Moreover you've got plenty of goodies including the French original trailer, character synopsis, plane synopsis a filmography of Miyazaki and posters of the film.

The content is, as you may have guessed, excellent. It's totally different from the other Ghibli film on DVD: Grave of the fireflies. No cry here, it's just like a fairy tale even if at one moment it goes serious about war and with the Ghibli's touch it's hitting you right in the heart. The storyline itself is very interesting and it's not aimed at children, everyone can watch it and enjoy it provided you are still willing to dream. You have to buy it.
