A decade after Natalie Portman was chosen to give birth to Luke and Leia in the Star Wars prequels, HR is reporting the actress may be traveling to space once again. With her thriller Black Swan being praised at the Venice and Telluride film festivals last week, Warner Bros. Pictures has offered Portman the lead role in Alfonso Cuaron's sci-fi tale Gravity.

The lead in the 3D epic survival story, co-written by Alfonso and Jonas Cuaron, has been a highly sought role for months, with Angelina Jolie pulling out of it recently. Natalie would be joining the previously committed Robert Downey Jr. Production is slated to start filming in England at the end of January.

The $80 million 3D survival story centers on a woman stranded on a space station after satellite debris slams into it and wipes out the rest of the crew. Robert Downey Jr. already has committed to a supporting role, but much of the picture is devoted to the female character, who must survive a solitary ordeal much in the way Tom Hanks did in "Cast Away."

dam.. never really realized how much Natalie Portman looks like Keira Knightley?

By the time this movie comes out it will have been over 5 years since Children of Men. Alfonso decided to take a break from movies after getting divorced and learning his youngest son has autism. It's nice to see him back and making movies again.

@violator14

Which is why they cast Knightley as Sabe, her double, in The Phantom Menace.

Wonder if she'll undergo Astronaut training for the role. She's gonna have to put on some muscle and mass to be believable as one. Astronauts tend to look fit, trim, and more importantly, properly fed.

This sounds pretty cool.

 I like the sound of this. So if it's similar to Cast Away, will Natalie be stranded on this space station for a long time? Like years? I think being stranded in space would be worse than being stranded on an island. Either way, whatever Natalie is in I'll watch.

This girl is losing all her appeal with her skin and bones look. God knows a like a slim woman but she is getting to a ridiculous point

Looks very cool. I think Portman is better suited to this role than Jolie anyway...

I already knew that tiredjay was right on that casting but I still never fully realized how much they looked alike until seeing that picture. Wow.
