PREVIEW: The Journey Begins for VANGUARD: SAGA OF HEROES
By: Frank PaisDate: Friday, May 28, 2004
Microsoft Game Studios unveiled their next generation massively multiplayer game, VANGUARD: SAGA OF HEROES, earlier this month at E3 in Los Angeles. The much anticipated title from developer Sigil Games Online was shown to approximately 400 people on an invite only basis. The attendees were treated to a 20-minute demo from Sigil's live server situated in Carlsbad, California. Developers delivered a living and breathing alpha to Microsoft last month. What we saw was incredible to say the least.
The starting continent for some races is known as Thestra. This is where the demo took place. Elves, dwarves, humans and Vulmane (a wolf man of sorts) were shown off with fluid animations. A brief look into the tasks of crafters could be seen as a player character was mining in the tunnels of Dargun's Tomb while a party of explorers battled Trolls nearby. Jeff Butler, Vice President of Sigil Games Online, explained that both crafters and adventurers will have to work together in order to explore the entire Tomb, and in fact, all of the game world. In most games today, crafters sit in town and hotkey their way to fortune and fame on eBay. Not going to happen here. Grab your mining pick, craft your weapons, even build a ship if you like crafting is not going to be a mundane macrofest. Ship crafters, in fact, hold the key to exploring other continents. Players will not be able to just click on a portal and appear in a new land. Everything will rely on player symbiosis. There will be player owned vendors, workshops and housing to make VANGUARD one of the most immersive games ever made.
Microsoft announced that VANGUARD will employ voice chat and notification tools from Xbox Live. It will be integrated with MSN Messenger in mobile devices so that players can stay in touch with each other when offline or be alerted when their castle is under siege. Furthermore, VANGUARD will be the first game developed on the XNA platform which leads to the possibility of a Windows and Xbox release. Stay tuned for more details as they are revealed.
