PRISON BREAK: Photo Finish/Vamanos

Wow, these two episodes were easily the two best episodes of the season. The action came full speed and the twists were great. Prison Break is hitting its stride; primed for what I hope will be a fantastic series finale. In the first hour, Michael’s plan begins to come together. He and Whistler are busting out right down the side of the wall at 3:13 in the afternoon just when the sun gets in the face of one guard while another is unconscious thanks to a little drugging by Linc and Whistler’s girlfriend. The plan is very convoluted, much less controlled than Michael’s first escape plan. There are three times the number of things to go wrong in this escape compared to the previous one. A lot more of the plan is happening outside of the prison out of Michael’s control, being handled by everyone’s favorite idiot Linc.
Michael is a smart and observant guy (as if we didn’t already know this) and he feels like something is up with Sara so he tells Linc that he needs a new picture of her. Linc’s secret has been boiling over in him so he finally just tells Michael the truth. I’ve been waiting for this for a while, for Michael to learn the truth and become vengeful. Michael needs a diversion and I think his solution comes partly out of necessity and partly out of real anger. He challenges Whistler to a fight to the death. While everyone is in the yard waiting for the fight to begin, they will be escaping. The escape failed in an exciting and a bit humorous way. I say humorous because Michael is a real control freak but there’s nothing he could do about clouds. The failed escape could be a little frustrating because it’s basically a reset button. All of the build up that’s been happening this season was for naught. The only reason I’m not frustrated is that I believe the backup plan won’t take too long to execute. Since the escape failed, Michael and Whistler are forced to fight. Michael is taking the fight easy, only doing the minimum while he tries to come up with a plan. Whistler is different though, in a precursor to what we’ll see in the second hour a darker side of Whistler comes out. If one of the two of them must die he’ll do what he must to make sure it’s not him. Luckily, the fight is stopped when prison guards burst into the prison to investigate the attempted escape.
Big things happen when the prison guards discover the escape attempt; primarily that they inform the prisoners about all the manipulation of them done behind the scenes to make Lechero leader of the prison. I fully expected to see Michael be forced to re-partner with T-Bag, Bellick, and Mahone to escape and when that happened I predicted that the escape would fail. Now a new team is emerging. Lechero comes to Michael and tells him that now that all of his power is gone, he will escape with Michael. The preview for next week shows them digging so I bet Bellick and T-Bag end up helping dig. Mahone won’t be part of the crew because he accepts a government deal and leaves Sona before he can be accused of a murder. He’s in custody awaiting a deal to get finalized. It all feels a little shady and I bet we see Mahone escape soon.
Outside the prison, Linc really blows the plan. He is to lead Susan B. to believe that the escape will happen that night giving Michael time to get the upper hand when they escape hours earlier that Susan will know. Well, with a simple slip of the tongue, Michael gives up the truth and he is forced to cooperate with her on the exchange. Sucre decides to stay around and back Linc up because he feels that he owes it to him and Michael. Sucre is a character I’ve always liked and I hope he actually gets to do more soon, other than make himself a crash test dummy. Speaking of characters I like, I really enjoy Susan B. Every week I like her more and more. She can be so soft for fleeting moments before returning to her over the top extremely hard and evil self. She gets to steal scenes with Linc and with LJ. At the end of the second hour, we learn that Susan’s real name is Gretchen and we learn it from Whistler himself. She comes to see him after the failed escape and we learn they are connected to each other in some way. We’ve been led to believe that Gretchen might kill Whistler after he gives up whatever information he has but apparently, their connection is much more complicated. This was a really great “Oh crap!” moment in the series so far. I knew Whistler was a bad guy, much worse than he was making out, but I hadn’t thought about him actually working with Gretchen.
