It's been relatively quiet on the Avatar front since the teaser trailer and "Avatar Day" excitement but producer Jon Landau still believes it will come through for fans, both in expectations and at the box office. After showing off 30 minutes of footage of James Cameron's next film at the 14th Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea, Landau made some bold comparisons to AFP.
"Any fear about this film is long behind us," Landau said on the sidelines of the 14th Pusan International Film Festival in South Korea, after screening 30-minutes of selected scenes from the film.
"When we started it was a little like the people at NASA who first went to the moon," he said.
"When John Kennedy said they were going to put someone on the moon, they didn't really know how they were going to do it and when we started we had an idea but we had no idea how we were going to do it either."
Landau and Cameron have spent the past four-and-a-half years putting the new film together, promising a combination of computer-generated imagery, 3-D effects and live action, the likes of which the world has never seen.
The pair seem to be on the money -- just as they were with "Titanic", which despite doubts from initial test screenings and critics went on to gross close to two billion dollars worldwide, making it the all-time box office champion.
"Avatar" follows the exploits of paraplegic army veteran who is taken to another world where his genes are mixed with those of an alien creature -- the new being becoming the "avatar" of the film's title.
"The excitement for me is that we are finally going to be able to show something that we have been working on for four-and-a-half years. Because a film is nothing if no one sees it," said Landau.
"No single movie can revolutionise the movie industry but one film can be a step in the evolution of movies. What we think we are doing here is unlocking the door for more filmmakers to tell more stories."
What's left to say, this movie will blow everyone's socks off, it shake the foundations of earth, it'll cure cancer, it'll stop global warming or alleviate the rumors etc etc
All hyperbole aside this movie is going to be awesome. Cameron's record when it comes to genre stuff is untouchable. The man knows what we like and I'm %100 positive this will be another example of his genius.
I don't care what the nay sayers say, I guess it's nay, but I'm looking forward to seeing the combo of live action and cgi in this new world with all its beauty and creatures
I'm predicting at least 130mil opening weekend. I know it's early for predictions but I read that it'll open in about 3000 3D screens and the price on those is higher and a percentage of that is I-Max which is even higher. I expect to catch it at least 2 times opening weekend. I wouldn't be totally surprised if it sets a new record to be honest and I hope it does cause Cameron is mulling a trilogy from what I read in the past and I'd love to see what he has in store for us
The only thing this movie's got going for it is Cameron's name. I will see it opening weekend of course. But I don't see a movie for the director only. I am more interested in Air bender than this one which I thought it was when first anounced. And "what a twist" guy is a lesser director.
I hope that I am wrong, but I have a bad feeling about this movie. Movies like this usually have a hard time living up to all of the hype- Like I said, I hope I am wrong.
I have a feeling even if the movie sucks, fanboys that are humping Camerons leg so much will like it no matter what.
I have a feeling its going to be good too but I'm not going to let Cameron bend me over and have his way with me. The special effects are anything but special but he does have a good enough track record you have to give the guy the benefit of the doubt. Even the undefeated Patriots lost the Super Bowl. Anything can happen.
The previews look pretty good, its does kind of look like something my kids would watch on sat mornings. But still can't wait to see it in the theaters. hopefully the its live up to all the hype the studios are giving it.
I dont know if it will bring in record breaking monies like wiseguy said but i think we all know it will draw in a huge chunk of change
Hopefully this will be good the first time around. It's probably just me, but James Cameron movies don't seem to age well with me. I also hope there's no kids in the movie...the guys sucks at directing children, IMO. Edward Furlong was just awful in "T2", and I guess there's a reason why Carrie Henn (Newt from "Aliens" was never in another movie ever. I also think that all of his Director's cuts suck. I honestly think he's regarded as such a good director because he's got intelligent people telling him what he should cut or change. I still think his best movie was "The Terminator"...nothing like the original. Sure, it lacks the eye candy of the 2nd one, but over all I just think it's a better movie. All that being said, I am kind of looking forward to it. As I indicated, I usually do enjoy his movies the first time around.
Avatar has already done more for Hype than any film ever including LoTR as far as I am concerned. I do hope it lives up to the press its going to be quite the let down if it doesn't. I will not give Cameron a pass on issues like story, plot, and development. Just because the FX are beyond cutting edge the story had better re-invent the wheel to keep up.
Wiseguy, were you talking about Avatar or Chuck Norris? Was digging the cure cancer description. As for the movie, I'm looking forward to this, if only to see what they do with the 3D technology. Should be failry amazing based on what I've seen and read about. The idea of using two high-definition cameras in a single camera body to create depth is amazing. But then I'm a technology freak, so whatever. I try not to make too many judgments regarding story, etc., based on a preview, but I have to say, visually it looks incredible.
