Producer Talks G.I JOE and TRANSFORMERS 2

Our friend Robert Sanchez over at IESB has published a decent interview with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, a man who's working on two high profile projects for Paramount & Dreamworks, G.I Joe and Transformers 2. For "Joe", the producer explained that production will begin in five weeks and that we can expect more casting announcements from now to that day. Here's a bit of the interview.

It's a tricky balance. One, you want to keep the story elements secret. I can say this very convincingly, if you're a Joe vs. Cobra fan, then you will be feel incredibly happy about the movie... I would say a Batman Begins. Well, I would say this, it would be more like the original Batman in the sense that you know, it's really taking a comic book, have you seen the original cartoon movie? The Joe movie?... If you would you say the original GI Joe movie was like the original Batman movie with Jack Nicholson then I would say this is like Batman Begins.

For next robot adventure, he again told us that production is waiting on the WGA strike. They hope to get production rolling on June 2, 2008 but as you know, this is around the time that SAG/DGA also have contracts expiring with AMPTP. As such, a lot of unknowns are in the air...

We're nowhere because of the strike, we won't know until we come back. We have a very fine outline and we know exactly where we want go with the movie but until this writers strike comes back, we'll find out exactly where we are. Michael is completely on top of every detail. He's designed a lot of great stuff already. He's got a lot of great sequences imagined but you know, he needs some writers to work with before he's ready to go, so I would say June 2nd is an unofficial start, it's the target date we'd like to go for but, you know, we've got to get some writers to help us.

Transformers 2 will hit theaters June 26, 2009.

G.I Joe will hit theaters August 7, 2009.

I know not everyone is excited about these two movies but I am optimistic. I enjoyed TF on a guilty pleasure level and would hope GI Joe and TF2 will be as much popcorn fun.

I'll be at these, first night. Hell I'll even spend the extra 4 bucks to see them on IMAX
Loved TF 1, It's hard to f-up toy commercials being adapted into col special effect, sumer blockbuster movies. CAN'T WAIT!!

I liked TF. I have the strong idea that people expected too much from it. It is a based upon toys and a Saturday morning cartoon. What can you expect when that is the source material? it was never supposed to be serious. And it was never going to be like the original cartoon either, that would have been kinda lame. A couple of the characters could have been left out, particularly that loud mouth agent that kept arresting Sam. he was just LAME. I have higher hopes for TF2. lets here it for The Dinobots, the Constructacons, and Galvatron!

I don't know about GIJOE, but it could be good I guess. it could suck major monkey ass though too......

I am so Stoked for GI Joe. I loved that cartoon when I was a kid. Cobra Commander was always so cool, and I loved the teamwork of the Joes. I hope they can capture the magic I felt as a kid. As for Transformers, I'm sure it will have some great action.
And Axia I'm tired of people saying what do you expect it's based on a cartoon. When the movie is more cartoon like than the cartoon itself that is not good. I'll tell you what I expect I expect someone to take the premise of the show with the characters we love, make it look realistic, but bring it up to date. You can make amazing movies from the premise of a lot of cartoons. No I don't want a cartoon characature of a movie. I want all the kick ace with none of the garbage. It's doable. Don't make excuses for them.
Oh and just to complain about one more thing off topic. (and I don't really care, but I'll admit that I watch some of the show some years.) Why are all the actors not doing the Globes. I know about teh strike, but why not go to an awards show. Are they trying to stand up for the writers? Well anyway The Golden Globes is CANCELLED!

almostunbiawhaaaa?!!...
I don't know what TF cartoon you watched when you were a kid, but maybe you should go re-watch it and see how cartoonist it really was. Cause this movie was as good as the old toy commercials, uh I mean cartoons I watched as a kid 20 years ago.
You sound like you have some romanticized version that you remember,. But go re watch the episodes, HELL I love the old cartoon still, but it is no less goofy than the movie was. YES YES INDEED many of you had waaaay to high of expectations for a movie about alien shape shifting robots, based on a weekly 30 min long toy commercial from your nostalgically biased youth

gauly, you know I have love for TF just like you, but I think almost and a lot of the guys just wanted something a little more traditional... I mean fun or not, some of the stuff was a little out there, even I could have done without the whole tiptoeing through the backyard deal, and agree with most than Anderson and Tuturro could have been left on the cutting room floor, hell i even agree that the Decepticons needed a bigger role. The only time I get pissed off is when people on this site start trying to make it sound like you have to be an idiot to have liked it. Bay films are almost always fun, and the FX were top notch, so i liked it. I totally agree with you that the sorce material is not a masterpiece of American fiction, but there are a few things Bay could have done to follow the old formula a little better. But Bay is a smarter guy than fans give him credit for. I think he knows what audiences will be looking for in a sequel. Hell I thought Bad Boys 2 would be the equivelent of fimed monkey turds, but i hate to admit it, it was some of the most fun I've had at the theatre (I'm sure many would disagree), so I'm ready for TF2.

gauleyboy420 • Jan 08, 2008, 05:28pm •
Allright, I totally give you the tiptoeing in the back yard scene is a little annoying. It was definately below ha Autobots. I'll concied to that scene stinking.
For some reason though, I liked John Tuturro in the fil, and Anthony Anderson. Would I have liked to see more decepticon developement, YES, but I think we'll get all we are asking for in part 2.
I appreciate your point about those who hate it absolutely, and condemn anyone for liking it. And agree with you. So yeah I'll lay off a bit, because it would be hypocritical to expect everyone to like it, If I don't think I should be criticized for liking it. Yes it has faults, but I still loved it. I don't think everyone needs to. But like you I eagerly await the sequel.
You bring up good points without condescending, a rare thing on this site, I applaud you sir.

I personally have a love/hate thing with Transformers but I expect the sequel to be much better. The guy already said more robots, so that can only mean a good thing.

GI JOES being compared to Batman Begins? I almost want to believe it.

madmanic999 • Jan 08, 2008, 06:04pm •
That a boy gauley, even mad lightens up, you have to around here, besides, we have so much to look forward to... There's GI JOE, TF2 and of course 50 maniacs getting their panties in a bunch over michael bay films... it's the small things in life gauley, the small things in life...
OH YEAH, let me just say it one more time...
GRIMLOCK... OOOOOOOOOHHHH that was sexy... I'm gonna hit that again...
GRIMLOCK......
I know people don't agree but I think the big dumb Dinobot could be a sweet addition.
Oh yeah, and i want me some Soundwave too!

dangunn80 • Jan 08, 2008, 07:16pm •
