According to Fox, Production has gotten underway on the action-adventure fantasy film, The Dark is Rising.

The film tells the story of Will Stanton, a young man who learns he is the last of a group of warriors who have dedicated their lives to fighting the forces of the Dark. Traveling back and forth through time, Will hunts for a series of mysterious clues and encounters forces of unimaginable evil. With the Dark once again rising, the future of the world rests in Will's hands.

David L Cunningham will direct a cast which includes: Ian McShane, Frances Conroy, Christopher Eccleston and Alexander Ludwig will portray the story's hero, Will Stanton.

The film will be released on September 28, 2007.

KJ's Take:  Eh, sounds like it could be pretty cool and it surely had a good cast.  Need to see a trailer.

I'm not saying that this movie will be any good, but Ithink it is a stretch to say it sounds like "Warlock". I just hope that it sucks considerably less then Warlock did.

I like me that cast. I agree, KJ, wow me with a trailer and I'm there.

Execution, execution, execution. It will make or break a movie like this.

I agree with 20105. This is another retelling of an archetypal storyline. The new young warrior the fate of the world depends on facing great labors to be a man and hero. It's been used in everything from King Arthur to Star Wars to the recent Eragon. Doing the mythic hero right depends on execution.

I am looking forward to this movie but I am also concerned about it. The book is awesome and I can see it being done on screen, but it will be very hard to match the weirdness of the story or to make it easy enough to understand for the average viewer. The book itself is a little difficult to follow because reality is warped and things change without warning. One minute they are in the present and the next they are in the past. The interesting part is that the characters all take it in stride, as if it is the most natural thing in the world. In the book it makes sense because you get what's going on in their heads but I'm not certain how that will come off on screen.

The best part about the book is the atmosphere. It is very dark and mysterious from the first scene and continues that through the whole thing. The atmosphere is most similar to "A Wrinkle in Time," which is another cause for concern. Have any of the adaptations of "A Wrinkle in Time been any good?
So, I'm looking forward to this because it is an incredible story and *IF* they get the atmosphere right and work out how to do the time and reality warps without making it dumb or cheesy, this could be an awesome movie.

Production has just gotten underway, but the movie's going to be released at the end of September? That doesn't give a lot of time for filming and post production work. I like the cast and the plot, so if the trailer is ok I'll see this one.

The short production might be possible for this movie because there shouldn't be many special effects. That may sound odd because it is a fantasy and there is magic in it, but the magic is more natural. The book takes advantage of a "slieght-of-hand" approach more than a showy one. Something isn't there one minute and is there the next. No big explosions or massive special effects. Instead, it plays on what you *know* can and cannot exist - things that are in the wrong place or time or doing something that they shouldn't. A wall vanishes to reveal a great hall where the ancients have gathered, a boy turns out to the last of a line of immortals (as in, the last to be born). Stuff like that. As I said earlier, it is the atmosphere that makes this story so facinating. If they can't get that right, then it won't be worth it.
