Gotta agree with jackwagon here. I love me some gore at times but I've said before that implied violence can be just as effective if not more so than actual gore.
I watch Alien and Aliens on basic cable anytime they're on and they remain just as effective, same with Blade Runner and The Matrix to name just a few examples.
I just don't see the infatuation of the R rating except as for what ultrazilla said, to keep the teens out as much as possible

RaithManan,
Can you give some specific examples of films that were "dumbed down" in order to get a PG-13 rating? AVP was awful by itself, so the lack of blood/language in the film wouldn't have made a difference (in fact, AVP-Requiem was an R-rated version of AVP, and that was even worse). Live Free or Die Hard didn't feel watered down at all, minus the omission of McClane's trademark line (which was included in the unrated DVD cut of the film anyway). Drag Me to Hell, The Ring, and The Sixth Sense all got away with a LOT as PG-13 releases. And The Dark Knight was no kid's film either. I see no problem with studios releasing films as PG-13 as long as the director's original vision isn't compromised.
