RaithManan,

Can you give some specific examples of films that were "dumbed down" in order to get a PG-13 rating?  AVP was awful by itself, so the lack of blood/language in the film wouldn't have made a difference (in fact, AVP-Requiem was an R-rated version of AVP, and that was even worse).  Live Free or Die Hard didn't feel watered down at all, minus the omission of McClane's trademark line (which was included in the unrated DVD cut of the film anyway).  Drag Me to Hell, The Ring, and The Sixth Sense all got away with a LOT as PG-13 releases.  And The Dark Knight was no kid's film either.  I see no problem with studios releasing films as PG-13 as long as the director's original vision isn't compromised.

Gotta agree with jackwagon here. I love me some gore at times but I've said before that implied violence can be just as effective if not more so than actual gore.

I watch Alien and Aliens on basic cable anytime they're on and they remain just as effective, same with Blade Runner and The Matrix to name just a few examples.

I just don't see the infatuation of the R rating except as for what ultrazilla said, to keep the teens out as much as possible

@ultrazilla2000, yuuup, you got that right. though im the kind of person that will go over to the people and let them know they are being to loud, sometimes i get an apologie and some times some people get mad and there has been times i have had some people" teens" kicked out the theater for being loud and rude.. the way i see it i pay money to enjoy the film and relax, not to hear idiots that can't or don't have any respect for the rest .."

I say make the film like it should be made, then live with whatever rating you get.  And because I said so, thus shall it be... right?

And even though a parent or guardian can escort a child to an R-rated movie, that still doesn't explain to me why the lady I sat beside in the latest Piranha brought her 8 year old son.  She kept gasping and telling her kid to cover his eyes throughout the whole movie.  Nope, that wasn't distracting or uncomfortable at all.  Nosireebob.

The infatuation with R is easy, boobs. Yay for boobs!  Perhaps some Charlize Theron boob, maybe Noomi Rapace.  Who knows.

Wiseguy 5/7/2012 1:58:45 PM

Well collider updated their story and according to Fox studios it is official, R rated.

Theron was on a live chat when they did that preview about a month back and she implied no nudity from her. If you want to see Theron boob check out 2 Days in the Valley but there just isn't much there, she's a looker and sexy as hell but lacks in that department

I think she was flashing boobs in Devil's Advocate too.  I gotta go hit Mr. Skin now.

Something doesn't have to be ultra-violent to be hard-edged, but could you really imagine Alien if it were edited down to being a kid-friendly film? I have been looking forward to Prometheus even more than Avengers, and given how much I enjoyed Avengers I will need to keep those expectations in check, but Ridley Scott sci-fi = TEH AWSMOE!
