PROOF

By: Robert T. Trate
Date: Tuesday, September 18, 2007

So, this week’s new releases have my head spinning. Besides being excited for a new Criterion Collection DVD, an awesome Roger Corman box set, I have to admit I was dumbfounded when I saw that only one of the “Grindhouse” movies was being released today. When “The Grindhouse” came out in the theaters the big appeal and draw, for me any way, was two movies with some faux trailers. A double feature that would thrill, shock, and above all, entertain. I was big fan of “The Grindhouse”, and got as many people to see it as I could. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough people to make the film a whopping success.   Oddly enough a lot of people, recently have been asking when “The Grindhouse” is coming out on DVD? I broke the news to them as I will to you that “The Grindhouse” has been split in two and both films do not even come out on the same day.   This shocks people, me included, because wasn’t the film supposed to be about recreating the late night B movie theater experience?   Aren’t people supposed to watch two films and some faux trailers? I am not naïve and I am sure the Weinstein’s and their fledgling company need to recoup their losses, hence the two separate releases of the two “Grindhouse” films.   Which is why I will start this week’s column with a…

Buyer Beware
Quentin Tarintino’s “Death Proof” should be interesting to watch with the extended and unrated cut. Though does anyone really want to sit through longer scenes with Jungle Julia and her crew rambling on and on?   I’ll sit through it if there are more gruesome final moments of each one of those girls, but does “Death Proof” have to be longer? I thought it was perfect the way it was.   However, the Buyer Beware is because Tarintino has always released special editions of all of his films.   So I would keep an eye out for the complete “Grindhouse” experience collection.   What, you don’t believe me? This week alone Tarintino is (finally) releasing “Kill Bill: Volume 1” the NC-17 version.   Do I need any more PROOF than that?

Now, if the Weinstein's had done this release in reverse...putting out the original version of Grindhouse first, followed by splitting the movie up into separate versions for release on DVD...well, I probably would have bought all three or rented them...just to see the differences between them, but there is no way in hell that I'm going to buy or rent the split up versions of the two movies, absent a chance to get the film as originally intended!!!

I must say I can't believe they did this.

I saw it on theaters, well the first one which was Planet Terror and I walked out of the Dead Proof one after 15-20 mins I just got bored, I dont know why since i always enjoy Tarantino's movies.
I thought of buying them when they came to dvd but now that i see they got separated i dunno if i will.
Maybe i'll just wait and see if they come out together that way even if i dont like it atleast i have planet terror wich i really enjoyed.

That lap dance scene in Death Proof was posted on Joblo.com and it realy sucks. It is the worst, most unsexy lap dance that I have ever witnessed!!! To add to that, the music used in the scene, was absolutely horrible!!!

An extended version of Death Proof? Didn't the original provide enough torture? Grindhouse was the biggest disappointment I sat through all year.

I like this "Buyer Beware" thing that you're doing. It's actually nice to receive fair warning.

After reading that an NC-17 version of Kill Bill v1 was going to be released today, I got completely stoked! So, naturally, I Ctrl-T'ed over to Amazon to slam it in a cart with credit card cocked and ready to get that bad boy on his way home... Nope. Not available for sale. I checked other DVD retailers as well, and nobody is selling it. So I think that the release date has been pushed back (til "who knows when"). If anybody knows of a e-tailer that is selling the DVD, post it!!!

I checked it did get pushed back! Maybe they'll release them in a box set special edition with Vol. 2? You know the way it was meant to be?

Still though Pulp Fiction Special Edition, True Romance Special Edition, Resevoir Dogs Special Edition... all came out after they dropped the price to 9.99 of the bare bones version....

As much as I agreet that they should have just had these two films together on DVD, I do not think it really matters in the end. I mean, they would have came out with a SE of Grindhouse and if it was on ONE DVD, in tone, would actually be more like 5 DVD's and consist of a bigger money amount.

I am going to buy this movie TODAY and loved The Grindhouse experience. Death Proof, yes was slow, but was still fucking awesome!

I loved "Robinson Crusoe on Mars". Good stuff!

Okay. . .I bought the dvd of "Death Proof"
because. . .well, I really liked the original
"Grindhouse" double feature, and, I too,
got as many people to see it as I could. However, I still would like to see the deleted
scenes and other extras. That said, I also
want to own the movie that I saw in the theatre. I'm afraid that we live in a society
that has become so enamored of hour-long
dramas and reality shows, that they've forgotten what it's like to go to a double
feature at the movie. Since drive-ins aren't
as abundant as they used to be, I guess
it must be a generational thing.
