PTA to Direct GEAR?

Kotaku's Brian Ashcraft reports that Paul Thomas Anderson (THERE WILL BE BLOOD) is interested in directing the big screen adaptation of METAL GEAR SOLID.

Konami's Aki Saito, who is handling the film negotiations, told Ashcraft, "Paul Thomas Anderson is interested."

Hideo Kojima, the game's original creator and designer, will not be directing. He will instead serve as a producer.  Kurt Wimmer wrote the script.

Saito noted, "Often Hollywood adaptations have the original game creator involved at the beginning, but somewhere along the line they fall out of view. This is why it's very important for us to carefully pick the studio for this project."

The MGS story centers on Solid Snake, a retired soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons disposal facility to neutralize the terrorist threat from FOXHOUND, a renegade special forces unit. He attempts to liberate their two hostages, the head of DARPA and the president of a major arms manufacturer, and stops the terrorists from launching a nuclear strike. Snake also confronts and defeats members of FOXHOUND.

Update:  Collider.com is reporting they emailed someone involved with the upcoming movie and they said the rumor about Paul Thomas Anderson is “completely false and ridiculous."

Paul Thomas Anderson is a great director and I can see him pulling this off although it seems strange to me that he would pick this type of project to go after...Anyways I will go and see anything he puts on the big screen, so heres hoping for the best...

Yeah, right, Paul Thomas Anderson directing MGS.

Pfft. I'll believe that one when somebody other than Kotaku reports it, and isn't using the Kotaku story as it's source.

My personal feelings are that if a Metal Gear Solid film is made, there should only be one. Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater, these games did for the MGS storyline what The Matrix 2 & 3 did for The Matrix. Which is to say they totally ruined the franchise. It is one thing to suspend disbelief for a character like Psycho Mantis in MGS, but when you start introducing immortal vampires and fat guys on roller skates, or spider-guys jumping from tree to tree and all that nonsense. . . . well it just really feels more like an X-Men game than a "Espionage Action" game. I don't think these sort of oddities would translate well to the big screen either.

Obviously all the game adaptation failures (some which I liked) aren't deterring Hollywood from moving ahead with all these projects. The story sounds ok but I'm under the impression that the games are pretty convoluted and probably need to be simplyfied or streamlined for the film. Anyway as long as it looks good I'm there.

All you gamers must feel good with all these adaptations, except hanso cause there's nothing on GoW. hanso maybe you should contact Uwe Boll he may be down for that.

I just hit my head against the keyboard because I saw Uwe Boll & God of War in the same sentence. Why you gotta hate like that Wiseguy? What has the GoW franchise done to you son?........I'm against game adaptations cause they always tend to suck but I think Metal Gear Solid can work cause the game is practically a movie anyways. If they make the storyline a bit easier to follow it should be no problem. My personal fave to be brought to the big screen although it worries me what it can end up being is, GoW. That has great story and action. With the success of 300, I don't know why no one has greenlight that project. Studios need to start approaching video game films like Marvel did with Iron Man and WB with Batman Begins, then will see some truly great video game films being made. MGS, GoW, Gears of War, Legend of Zelda should all work very nicely if they approach it correctly.

Vapor - you gotta do Snake Eater to show the whole Big Boss storyline that leads to the clones, just make the villains more grounded to reality.
