PUNISHER #11 Review

"It isn’t exactly your traditional Punisher story..."

Never let it be said that Norman Osborn doesn’t make good on his promises. Frank Castle took his shot and missed and made it on Norman’s list. As this issue opens, Frank has been torn to shreds by Daken and left for dead, but before the H.A.M.M.E.R. goons can salvage the pieces, a group of those little mutate guys that used to hang around with Mole Man gather ‘em up and take what’s left of the Punisher down into the Morlock tunnels.

Meanwhile, a team of cyber-samurai are on Monster Island working under the mandate of “Destroy All Monsters!” This group of monster hunters has been systematically exterminating any and all monsters they can find - and nobody cares about monsters, right? No one except Morbius and the Legion of Monsters, who have gathered the remains of Frank Castle and rebuilt him as a hulking monstrosity. And in return, a request is made: will the Punisher lend his strategic military expertise to the upcoming human/monster war? Will he protect the left-behinds and unwanted and wage a new war, fighting to protect those whom no one else gives a damn about?

Personally, I found this issue to be a ridiculous jaunt that took the Punisher from a hard-hitting, realistic vigilante to a comical B-movie mockery. Old school readers and fans of the Punisher Max series will likely want to stay as far away from this issue as possible, as it is a complete 180 from the serious tone of that book, complete with monsters and a really goofy sense of humor… and I loved every single minute of it. Man-Thing, Morbius and Werewolf by Night all make appearances, along with some weird crab creatures, a lil’ tiny Fin Fang Foom with a broken arm and if you look really close, Devil Dinosaur is in there too.

Fans of Fear Agent who were worried when Rick Remender started working on Marvel books don’t need to fret any more. While Fear Agent has been put on hiatus, the team of Remender and Tony Moore have reunited to bring back the same type of genre blending action that we’ve grown to love; they’re just doing it with the Punisher now and it’s great to see them back together. And it’s always great to see Tony Moore drawing monsters! The art in this issue has a real EC Comics/Mad Magazine feel to the artwork, which completely works for me.

Anyone who feels that the Punisher is simply a one-dimensional character with nowhere to go? Well as it turns out, if you’re not afraid to shake things up a bit, there’s quite a bit you can do with the character. Like make him a Frankenstein monster. Actually, I’m sure he’s still going to be fairly one-dimensional, but at least now he’s a one-dimensional shambling hulk born of twisted science and necromancy. This new development might seem like it comes out of left field for a character like Frank, but in a sense, it just entrenches him more firmly in the traditional 616 Marvel Universe, albeit a corner of the universe that is seldom traversed these days.

Long story short: this is just the sort of bizarre twist I enjoy and if you do too, you might want to check it out. I can’t wait to see where this one goes.

This was one of the worst comics I have ever read.

I was enjoying this Punisher book up until this point (and I never liked this character before). Well, now it's one less book for me to read!

The concept is OK for something like an annual. But there is nooooo way I am going to sign up for something so ridiculous, so short-sighted that it's obviously being written for the trade.

The sudden change of storyline for Frank was bad enough. But the sudden change of storyline for Morbius and Werewolf by Night (and characterization) was particularly jarring and unnecessary. And the art. Oh, the art. They made the wrong choice here. They went cartoon-y instead of James Whale. A little expressionism would have changed everything! That might have been creepy and cool. This is obvious and cliche.

So bad.

Cable and Dead Pool should show up and Cable can put Frank back together
