id Software and Activision announced that QUAKE 4 for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft has shipped to retailers nationwide. This next chapter in the futuristic war between the Earth and the Strogg transports players into the boots of Matthew Kane, an elite member of the legendary Rhino squad as they, along with an armada of Earth's finest soldiers, invade the home planet of the barbaric aliens threatening to annihilate Earth. QUAKE 4 for Xbox 360 is available at retail outlets for a suggested retail price of $59.99 and carries an "M" (Mature -- Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language) rating by the ESRB.

"With QUAKE 4 for Xbox 360, gamers can now take the battle for Stroggos to the home theater as this epic war for survival comes to life with true high-definition sights and 5.1 surround sound," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "This is the next generation of gaming and QUAKE 4 fans should prepare to experience a non-stop ride of action and adrenaline as they battle along side Rhino Squad, through this heroic mission to defeat the unstoppable Strogg army and preserve the human race."

Developed by Raven Software and executive produced by id Software, QUAKE 4 picks up only moments after the events of the epic QUAKE II, with the Earth's fleet launching a massive offensive to the planet Stroggos. As Matthew Kane, gamers invade the alien stronghold fighting alone, along side other Marines, and in mechanized walkers and hover tanks in incredible combat missions against the Strogg and their disturbing amalgamations of man and machine. Built on id Software's revolutionary DOOM 3 technology, QUAKE 4 also features the world renowned fast-paced multiplayer competition-style gameplay of the historic QUAKE III Arena. Incorporating Capture the Flag, Arena Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and an all new Tournament mode for up to 8 players on Xbox Live online gaming system or System Link, QUAKE 4 is poised to set the standard for online multiplayer bragging rights.

QUAKE 4 also contains hours of bonus content, including behind-the-scenes videos and interviews plus a complete version of QUAKE II, re-engineered exclusively for Xbox 360 featuring up to 4-player support for co-operative play and multiplayer support over System Link.

Uh, why wasn't this a launch title? X-box 360 has not big stars in terms of launch titles. Microsoft better hope Japan buys this X-box.

First off...WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!?!? The X-Box 360 JUST CAME OUT TODAY...November 22nd, 2005. The game has been shipped to stores as per the article says. Where are you getting this "why wasn't this a launch title?" crap from?!?! Somebody draw this poor soul a picture...

Second. Microsoft had awesome sales with the first X-Box even though it failed in Japan, so yes, I'm sure they are hoping it does well there...but even if it doesn't, I doubt they would cry into their pillows at night. The system will be a hit in the U.S. once again, and since there are more gamers in the U.S. than in Japan (hello, look at the population difference between the two countries) the Japanese market is really second in importance anyways.

Japan is an important market when you take into account that both Sony and Nintendo are raking money from the populace whilst Microsoft languishes.

Heck, the X-Box was being outsold by Dreamcast in Japan. That's right. A system that's been defunct and unsupported for several years now was outselling Microsoft's flagship console effort.

However, I believe Microsoft learned their lesson and has taken steps to capture some enthusiasm for the 360 (I.E. global release; more RPG developers). Who knows how it'll work out though.

Have you even looked at the list of launch titles, yotar? It is by far the strongest batch of launch titles I've seen. There are more launch titles that I want than I could reasonably afford at this time.

There's PDZ, DOA4, Call of Duty 2, PGR3, Kameo, Quake 4, Gun, and the various sports titles (most notably the amazing looking Madden). I can't recall the last time a system released with more than one game that I was actually intrested in. So this is by no means weak.

Too bad the launch itself has been such a catastrophe! What with reports of Microsoft creating an "artificial" shortage, to 360's crashing in the first race of Project Gotham, etc.

While the titles may be a FAR stronger batch (as compared to Xbox/PS2's launch) I'm not too impressed yet with how things have been handled on any other front.

I'll be saving my money for Sony's Blu-Ray PS3...

Raithen...it's interesting you're commenting on possible software glitches with the 360, then mention saving your money for the PS3. The PS2 (even the PSP to a smaller degree) experienced numerous problems at launch with faulty software. You're really not being fair towards Microsoft. Smart consumers will wait awhile before buying ANY new console so the first batches can be used as test marketers. Of all the consoles, Nintendo's seems to be the hardiest upon first release based on previous reports...maybe Microsoft and Sony both could learn that (if only that) from the big "N".

And as far as Microsoft creating an "artificial shortage"...that makes no sense. The system was just released...it's way too early to have accusations like that. Besides, how does that profit a company? It doesn't. It only profits the leeches on Ebay who sell them for a grand apiece.

ultra: I fail to see how my comments are hypocritical regarding waiting for the PS3. I never said that I would buy the console blindly on its launch day - quite the contrary, I consider myself a "smart consumer" and will wait until the dust settles.

While the "artifical shortage" conspiracy has been hotly denied by Microsoft officials, there has been a considerable amount of criticism and suspicion within the industry with how Microsoft has handled this launch. I personally find it hard to believe that Microsoft would not have learned from previous launches (PS2 and Xbox) come to mind where shortages were rampant.

You ask how this profits the company? It's a pure hype mechanism. As a consumer, you may have witnessed similar hype-fests in Xmas past. You'd be surprised how supply/demand can affect consumers with the right amount of carrot-dangling.

That being said, I agree whole-heartedly with your summation of Nintendo's history. To be honest, the Revolution is the console I'm personally "hyped" for the most...

• Nov 27, 2005, 04:48pm •
Ehh who cares the PS3 launch is so far away it doesn't even put a shadow on the 360 ditto for Revolution. So if you like the 360 find one and enjoy...I know I am.

• Nov 27, 2005, 10:42pm •
The PS3 casts a very long, very dark shadow across the 360 - believe me. I think we'll find out next Fall just how badly Sony will destroy the competition.

As per Nintendo, reports are first half of 2006 - ie. not too far away. Albeit, Nintendo has positioned itself outside the Sony/Microsoft war - they're not even trying to go toe-to-toe with either behemoth, and good on 'em for that. I hope they succeed. I certainly feel the Revolution is the only console that's really tried to come up with something unique - although, that could be a bad thing...

But yes, if you "like" (how could you, since it's just come out?) the 360 - by all means, track it down and enjoy!

• Jan 09, 2006, 09:31am •
Beh....the XBOX 360, like all consoles, SUCKS! And the games on those pieces of sh*t suck even worse. Give me a PC anyday!
