R2-D2 Confirmed for Episode VII

And the rest of the story

Last week we all saw the first official behind-the-scenes photo from Episode VII (below). It was in fact that of director JJ Abrams, producer Kathleen Kennedy, and our favorite astrotech droid R2-D2. This photo made it clear that R2 would appear int he next film. However, who were those two other guys in the film? Star Wars.com had their incredible story.

Meet Lee Towersey and Oliver Steeples, Star Wars fans and members of the worldwide R2-D2 Builders Club. They create fully functioning, film-accurate astromech droids like the R2-D2 seen in the photo, and they’re officially part of the creature effects team for Star Wars: Episode VII. They didn’t apply for their jobs, but still had what is probably the best reference one could hope for.

“It all started when Kathleen Kennedy toured the R2-D2 Builders area at Celebration Europe this past summer in Germany,” says Steeples, who finished his first R2-D2 in 2007, after 10 years of collecting parts and researching. “She posed for pictures with us, looked at all the droids we’d built and was very complimentary. I mentioned that the R2-D2 Builders in the UK were available if required, as a semi-joke. When I was contacted to work on the film by [executive producer] Jason McGatlin, it was on her recommendation.”

What an incredible story and great lesson in opportunity. See kids, it pays to open your mouth (read their full story here on the Star Wars Blog)

Always assumed R2 and C-3PO would be the 2 characters in all 9 films and this goes way back to when I first heard the rumors that there would be 9 films in all as a kid in the '80s

They should put flames on him because that would be cool.  Oh wait, this isn't Michael Bay, so he'll just shoot lens flares instead.

You couldn't have Star Wars films without R2 & 3PO.  So this news isn't exactly mind blowing...  :)

I'm of course assuming Anthony Daniels will again be C-3PO (Squeeze Disney for that dough, Daniels!). But will Kenny Baker the dwarf actor still be used for some scenes as R2 or has advancements in modern robotic technology stolen his job?

ElBaz13 11/20/2013 8:00:18 AM

I think Kenny Baker is done and was done during the prequels. He is old and technology is a lot better now to stuff him in a can.

He was in the prequels only as a token nod from GL since Daniels was involved. It was only fair on Lucasfilm's part. From what I heard, he was barely in R2 in the prequels. Only enough to have him in the credits.

Daniels will probably not don the suit. Just voice work.

Wiseguy 11/20/2013 8:41:15 AM

I couldn't care less who plays them as long as C-3PO's voice is right. Who the fuck would know the difference otherwise.

millean I doubt they'll appear in the stand-alone films and those will still be SW films right? Or maybe they'll do those a la Mystery Science Theater 3000 and have R2D2 projecting the film and C-3PO doing comical commentary as if the film was a "historical document"

R2D2 being in the Star Wars films is a given.

BREAKING NEWS: The sun is expected to rise in the east tomorrow morning.

Thanks for the earth shattering news.  What's the next SW announcement, Jedi will carry lightsabers?

DarthDestructicus 11/21/2013 12:35:14 PM

I agree with DarthBob!! This isn't any surprise to me. R2D2 and C3PO are fixtures in the SW universe, both movies and expanded. The problem is that right now there really isn't any news that Abrams and crew are ready to share. So they keep on sharing non-information because we're all too excited and too addicted to Star Wars to know that we aren't getting any new, substantial information about Episode VII!! This was truly a waste of cyberspace!!
