'Spider-Man' director Sam Raimi was recently hired to direct another installment of the franchise that made him great, and possible helm parts 4 and 5 of the series at the same time.

This week the director talked about his plans and the various rumors surrounding the films.

"It would be a real endurance test, probably only Peter Jackson knows how hard something like that would be," Raimi told MTV Splash Page about the prospect of back-to-back sequels. "If Tobey and me, and all the producers, like the story for two pictures and Amy wanted to do it, then we would do it. It just hasn’t been written yet."

Tobey Maguire has also been locked to return to the role of Peter Parker. Raimi said he'd love to bring Kirsten Dunst back and can't imagine doing a sequel without her, a vague statement that makes it seem as if the actress has not yet been signed for the sequels. He also hinted that James Franco may return, even though his Harry Osborn character was killed off in the most recent film. Guys like Cliff Robertson and Willem Dafoe have gotten steady work in spite of having died in the first movie.

Raimi also talked about the Dylan Baker, who has been a bit of an elephant in the room for parts 2 and 3. Baker plays Dr. Curt Conners, who fans know well transforms into the classic villain The Lizard at some point. Will Spidey's scaly and tragic foil finally appear?

"He’s a great actor, and I think one day The Lizard’s story will be told," Raimi told MTV, still holding his cards close to the vest. "I don’t know if it will be this one or not. I just don’t know. I’m definitely hoping to work with Dylan in the picture. I just don’t know who the villain is yet."

Raimi points to March 2010 as the production start for 'Spider-Man 4'.

What do you think? What villain should appear in the next Spider-Man movie? Post your comments below...

I would love to see The Lizard's story get told.  I would also like to see The Scorpion show up in one of these movies.  Past of his story could actually link to Doc Oc and his robot arm technology (applicable to the scorpion's tail).  As long as the movies are well done, I don't really care who the next villian on.  Bring on 4 and make it good!

If Sony were smart, they would back off and let Raimi do the movie he wanted. They interfered with SM3 and forced Venom on him. According to IMDb figures, SM3 made $336M on a $258M budget. The first two made $776M on $339M budget (combined). Add that to the general fan reaction and it doesn't take a genius to see that when the studio pushes its agenda on Raimi, the quality of the movie goes down. Give the man his money and leave him alone to make a good movie!

So the earliest we could see a spidey flick is 2011. . . Damn that seems so far away.

As far as villians go I would like the scorpion story or perhaps the sinster six

Speedball needs to appear in the next movie.  As well as Spider-Man's eco-friendly Spidey-Mobile dune buggy thing.  And Spider-Ham?  In #5, at least -- no later!

They should bring Venom back because he was just totally wasted. At least give us Mac Gargon Venom. Actually, that'd be the BEST way to do a two-villain film. The film could start out with Spidey fighting Scorpion and then segue into him finding the Venom symbiote.

Granted, it wouldn't be the classic Eddie Brock story but I'd pay them twice if I didn't have to see Topher Grace Venom ever again.

won't maguire be about forty by the time all this stuff is done?

No Lizard? Aw, that sux. Okay, do a crossover with Blade. Blade goes all commando and Spidey has to dispatch him once and for all. Parker gets bit at the end of Part IV, goes all vampy, and kills Aunt May as the credits roll. It'd be a nice lead-in to Spidey V.

Just no spidey clone story please!!!

I would like to see a Sinister 6 story but I think it may be overkill for a movie. Next I'd like a Lizard/Kraven or ManWolf/Kraven storyline.

It's funny how Raimi changed his tune once he didn't get The Hobbitts gig. Just redeem yourself for part 3 and look at part 1 to see how much better that was than the two sequels and see what works. Part 3 had too many bad things to name and 2 was way too chatty and slow.

Bring on the Lizard and maybe even Electro or Vulture? Those would make for interesting characters, and it would get the core audience back on board with SM....2011 seems like a long time away, but by the time it happens, other movies would hav e already whet our pallets by then....plus there's always a Ratner Angry Mob somewhere....we should be fine?
