Raimi Speaks On SPIDEY 4

Director Sam Raimi was at an event in Los Angeles in cooperation for a Spidey spoof contest sponsered by Target. While at the event, MTV had a chance to talk to Raimi for the first time in the post SPIDER-MAN 3 era. Some interesting comments came out of it from the director about the future. He seems certain once again that Sony will be releasing SPIDER-MAN 4 sooner rather then later but he doesn't know his personal responsibility in association with it.

Raimi: "Sony Pictures is going to be making many more 'Spider-Man' pictures," Raimi told MTV News. "I just don't know what [my] future holds yet."

He goes on to say that if he can't come up with a story he's comfortable with for the next installment in the franchise, he'd rather not do it.

Raimi: "If I can't find the right story that would work for me and that I could tell really well, I would like someone else to tell that story," he said of the already-announced "Spider-Man 4."  He paused, then said.."But if it's a great story and Sony will bring me back to the screen, I would love to."

It's been widely known for a few months that if Raimi doesn't do it, Maguire and Dunst will be out of it as well. They''ve both stated on public record if Sony doesn't bring him back, they're gone as well. MTV asked Raimi his thoughts and it seems Raimi is of the same belief if his two stars don't return.

Raimi: "It would be really hard for me to make a movie without Tobey and Kirsten playing the two leads," he said. "I would seriously think about James [Franco] too, but he bit the dust in this last one."

Even if he doesn't direct the next Spidey film, he insists he would like to have participation in it as a possible producer.

Raimi: "I would still hope that Sony would offer it to me [to direct] first," he said. "But that is not my place to say; it would be more about if Sony decided not to go with me. If not, it would be really up to them to come to a solution [for me to still be involved as a producer]."

As far as possible storylines he's thinking about in terms of SPIDER-MAN 4? It's expanding on Dr. Conner's story (The Lizard) and a possible Sinister Six team for it.

Raimi: "I would love to see Electro, Vulture, maybe the Sinister Six as a team," he said. "The Lizard is probably one of my favorite characters," he said of the baddie Connors eventually became in the comics. (He joined the Sinister Six when they became the Sinister Twelve, by the way.) "But ['Spider-Man 4'] will probably have to start with the central journey of the main character to arrive at the proper villain."

Sinister Six?! Spidey 3 was already muddled enough with 2.5 villains, six is franchiside.

i would love to see the movie take on carnage, simply to see how they do it. there are two options

1) go with the "ultimate" spiderman story line where Dr. Connors is spideys personal doctor, and requests to run tests on parkers blood thus making caranage.

2) Go with the fact that Dr. Connors still has a sample of the symbiote in his office from the end of 3 and that could escape and hit the jail cells with good old cletus kassidy!

or i would love to see Bruce Cambell as a bad guy (maybe as mysterio or something) and rhino still has to come along and so does the freaking lizard for christ sakes. The lizards character is all set, why not use it???

As much as I love Spidey, I haven't loved a movie since the first one, so I really don't care if they make a forth or not.

I hope that when they do Spidey 4, Carnage is no where near it. They need to go old school with Spiderman. The Sinister Six would be awesome but the villian I would most want to see, that could definitely hold a whole movie is Kraven the Hunter solo. His rivalry with Spidey is well documented. His inability to capture and kill Spidey causes him to lose his mind. It makes for a great movie.

He was a man!!! Oh noes......know any good psychologists scoxocs??? I've got problems.....

Seriously though, I like ponyboy76's angle. With the success of the Spidey franchise, marvel may take the opportunity to introduce or re-introduce another hero into the mix.

Maybe someone like the Black Panther would be a good fit if Kraven made an appearance.

I think the Sinister Six would work fine. Open the movie with a "crime wave" and within the first 25 - 30 minutes have Spider-Man take down 4 - 5 guys. Then have Dr. Conners become the Lizard and basically the "main" villain, the one who's story is explored the most. Eventually the lizard frees the other guys as they're being transfered to a super villain prison and they all hunt down spider-man.
