Raimi Too Exhausted for SPIDER-MAN 4

Nothing too shocking there since he's said it many times since SPIDER-MAN 3 hit theaters. Still, Sam Raimi gave his take on the development of SPIDER-MAN 4 while talking to our good friends over at Wizard Entertainment. He confirms that developing the first three films for this franchise took a lot out of him and when asked who he would pick for a director as the fourth film, he seemed a little gun-shy on the answer. Raimi is still on board the project as a producer but he will not direct.

WIZARD: Looking back, you've worked on Spider-Man in some way for nearly eight years. Has the excitement stayed with you?

RAIMI: I'm just as excited about the character, and so in that sense, yes. Although the physical energy level between how I felt before I started shooting versus what was left of me on the last day of photography, I was so exhausted at the end of "Spider-Man 3" I can't tell you. My love for the characters and my passion for the stories are the same, but I was just a shell of the person that I was after all of those movies.

WIZARD: If you had to take a break and pick a director to replace you on the franchise, is there anyone at the top of your list?

RAIMI: Because I love Spider-Man I would just say—I don't want to pick someone. I don't know if I’ll be directing the picture or not, but I'd like to say that it would be somebody that was the best gift I could give to Spider-Man—someone who understands him and loves him and could bring his passion and love to the character. A character director probably; no one else.

Sony has said recently that SPIDER-MAN 4 will hit theaters sometime in 2009. I'm not sure how that will happen with nothing in production at this point and the ongoing strikes in the near future but that's the word from the studio...

Who would you want taking the director's chair for the next Spidey? Sound off below..

for sure not brett ratner ! screw one franchise is enough....Bryan Singer can add some magic on it...but Wiseman can also do a good job, anyway with raimi as a producer can not be a strong character, singer won t accept.

There are plenty of other directors besides the ones mentioned that would do Spidey justice. Ratner wouldn`t want another comic book, thank goodness.

I'd like to see a fresh take on the franchise, not a reboot or anything drastic, just a sequel with a new director and some fresh perspective. Raimi is a genious and gave me three great Spidey flicks, but lets see what someone new can bring to the table.

James Cameron or David Fincher. Both were up for the original Spidey. I'd like to see any one of those two, especially Cameron to see what kinda technology he invents or uses for a Spiderman film.
Whoever they end up using though, has gotta love Spider-man and any of the remaining villains. Raimi wasn't into Venom and we know how that turned out thanks to the studio.
Please no Schumacher!
Oh and they gotta go with hopefully with the Lizard for the next film, and the Kraven ideas that've been floating around here would work also.

I think Fincher would be a great choice, but he`s probably a little too dark for the Studio. I can really see him doing a great Kraven the Hunter story. Cameron would be cool too, but we`d have to wait like 10 yrs before he finished it. What`s crazy, is it would probably be worth the wait.

My list :
David Fincher
Alex Proyas
Guillermo Del Toro
Christopher Nolan
Peter Jackson
James Cameron
Snyder
Rob Rodriquez
or better yet, an unknown.

Give the movie to me! I've got a great storyline for the movie! Give a great production team and director of photography and I'll make a great film!

I haven't seen Spider-Man 3 yet, but I can understand why Raimi would be drained. I expect if another direct takes the reigns for Spider-Man 4, it'll be someone who Raimi has worked with in the past and not some big name director like Cameron, Jackson, or Fincher. I wouldn't be surprised if it's David Slade. Slade directed 30 Days of Night, which Raimi produced.
