Sam Raimi, the director of the Evil Dead and Spider-Man films, has said numerous times over the last year that he will only be aboard more Spidey installments as an executive producer, preferring to take a break into different projects. Since those quotes, he has been assigned to lead a new series of Jack Ryan films for Paramount, a new fantasy television series based on Terry Goodkind's Wizard First Rule novels and overseeing numerous horror films through his Ghost House Productions shingle.

But apparently, he is still open to leading Spider-Man 4, judging from a quote that SHH is now reporting.

"James Vanderbilt is writing the script and I'm excited to read it. I think it's going to be done in a few months," Raimi told us, adding, "I'm hoping it's as great as our discussions were about it and I'm hoping it feels right for me because I love Spider-Man. I'm hoping I'm well rested enough to embrace it and I'm hoping Sony wants me to do it. If all of those things come together, I would love to do it. There are a lot of unknowns about the future."

He could mean the quote above as executive producer but it should be noted that Sony still has shot down rumors recently that there would be recasting of Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst's characters and both thespians have said in the past that they will come back if Raimi comes back. The director was also asked that question and click the link above to find out.

He also found time to tell Ryan Rotten about a possible Evil Dead remake and a sequel to 30 Days of Night, which his Ghost House shingle produced.

I really wouldn't if Raimi directed Spidey 4 but I would mind if they didn't recast Peter and MJ, especially MJ. I was honestly hoping for a totally new team of players. New director, with Raimi producing, and a new cast. Dunst sucks as MJ. Maguire is passable as Peter but if they come as a pair, then get rid of both of them. She seems to think that she's not expendable but she most definitely is.

I think what will mostly happen is that the entire cast from the first 3 Spidermans are back for the final 2 movies, if it's true they are being filmed back to back. Then Sony will let the franchise rest a couple of years and bam! recast everyone. I'm up for new poeple handling Spider-Man but for the continuity the ones that started should finish this thing up.
Hopefully the studio doesn't force him to have any villains Raimi doesn't care for.

As with the previous Batman fanchise, Spidey has become a bigger joke with each movie. Instead of expanding the complexities of the main characters, they give a carrousel of same issues with new villains that are associated to the same issues. And in the case of MJ, she gets to be a bigger hollow dansel in distress with each movie. They might just classify these movies as "zombie" movies... movies made for mindless drones. With all due respect to the spiderman fans.

Once again I agree with you ponyboy with Dunst. She is acting like if she is gone the movie is going to be shit and she is very expendable. I wouldnt mind to see a new M.J too. I do like Maguire as Peter Parker though. To me he fits the role really good. As for me I would like to see them bring back Venom to at least close the story on that. I was very disappointed on the limited use of the character. And as of 30 days of nights? I really enjoyed that movie alot and hope to see a sequel. There were suppose to be alot more towns the vampires can invade so I will be there when its release. As for a Evil Dead re-make I dont know. I am kind of scare them messing up a classic. But with Sam Raims there I guess only time will tell. Plus I guess im used to Bruce dont call me ash Campbell.

Don't understand the people that don't see SpiderMan 2 as a great movie. Was glad to see it listed in the 25 top action movies by EW. Not saying I'm right and you're wrong, just accepting of the fact someone will always have less respect for any movie than other people will.
The key to Spider Man 4 and 5 is a great story. Hopefully, Raimi and his brother stay away from what is hopefully a great script. No great script, no great movie...simple as that.
Dunst is a bad MJ? Christ, get over it all ready.
This sounds like it's going to happen to me, original cast, two more movies back to back. I can live with that,...hope the script is great.

It's because Spider-man 2 was not a great movie. It was a good movie, but a let down from the first movie. Now a lot of people liked it better than the first, but I am an origins fan, and I loved the development of the first movie, watching him become this great hero from a nobody. The emotions seemed strained in the second, like they were trying to make you feel a certain way instead of you just naturally feeling them. And I loved Doc as a kid, but I didn't care or him in the movie. Just seemed to contrived. Plus everyone seeing Pete on the train actually pissed me off.

As for SP4, I'm ok with Raimi, but I'm not excited about a forth at all. 3 was just too . . . you know what I can't explain why I didn't like it without sounding like a whiner. So I'll stop.

Anything that has the possibility of delaying the craptastic Sword of Truth books from being adapted is ok with me.

Why don't you tell us how you really feel.

I’m really conflicted on this. I firmly believe Raimi and the cast gave us 3 solid Spider-man films. I liked them all. I’ve listened to the haters and they do have some good points, especially in regards to 3, but overall these were fun films that, IMO, respected the source material (yes I know they didn’t mimic continuity exactly). These were big studio films. Raimi had a lot of control but shite was forced on him (Venom in 3). He could have Ratner’d the films but I think the end results were all enjoyable. There is ALWAYS going to be differences and compromises when big studios are going to be involved in these types of adaptations and, as much as it can suck, we need to be prepared for that and hope the actually creative people involved can still get out a good film. Unlike Ratner (Speaking of whom – he just announced Beverly Hills Cop 4 will be PG-13 and targeted for kids “who weren’t around for the first 3”. Sorry Ratner defenders. The guys a real tool with no honest respect for any property. Though I’m sure Eddie’s recent kiddie friendly shtick is as much to blame).

Now, all that said I do think Raimi and the current cast have said all they had to say (‘cept, of course, for JK as JJJ) and I’d like to see new folk on board. I ain’t talking a reboot. Save that for when this property returns to Marvel and we can get all the continuity we are craving. Make it continuation with a new creative team and cast (‘cept JK). My biggest complaint about the entire series so far is that Spider-man is a much funnier mofo than he’s been portrayed to date and THAT does REALLY disappointment me. So I guess I want someone with a better sense of humor at the helm and, as much as I like both Toby & Kirstin, it’s time to move on to some fresh faces.

I agree with Hanso. I love the Raimi movies and if he loves the current script enough to do the possible back to back 4 & 5 with the current cast I'm up for it.

For those of you who don't like the past Spidey movies or specifcly SM3, you have to understand that those movies were/are humongously successful, even SM3. There is really no financial reason to rock the boat with cast and crew if it's not necessary.
