Ranma 1/2 OVA Box Set

The Review!
The Ranma 1/2 OVA Box Set is very impressive. I'll be listing everything I found right and wrong with this DVD.

First thing, the video is absolutely amazing. I was blown away by the clarity and the vibrant colors. I was constantly pausing to check out the gorgeous artwork. The encoding was far beyond what I've seen before. If you've ever seen the Ranma 1/2 movies on DVD then you know what I mean. They're nothing compared to the OVAs shown here. Top notch!

The audio was of course a bit disappointing. Although everything was clear and you get to hear the English and Japanese tracks, I was hoping to find surround sound with this DVD. You'll only get the standard stereo. It's a picky thing but after watching animes like the Tenchi Muyo Ultimate Edition I was kind of expecting it. But clarity is still the key and that's what it had. Good job.

The packaging is pretty good. We have that clear plastic slipcover that's similar to the TenchiMuyo Ultimate Collection and the Fushigi Yugi Box Set. The cover was ok to me but I like the inside artwork of Ranma (female) and his mother who are clearly placed. It's pretty standard Pioneer stuff.

The bonuses are great. I really liked watching the opening and ending sequences without the credits that typically cover most of the screen. It was a nice surprise.

Now, here's some annoying things. The opening and ending sequences for the first and second are the same! Let me explain this. The first disc featured the same opening and ending for EVERY episode. It kinda got boring and I had to skip it. The second disc had a different opening and ending sequence but it was the same for that disc for every episode. After watching the clean versions which are called "music videos", I was hoping they had placed a different opening and ending sequence for each episode. It's a very minor quibble but something that would've avoided the dreaded skip button.

It's a great overall package. To be able to have all 12 OVAs here is something I love. If you're a Ranma 1/2 fan and you already own the movies on DVDs then you gotta get this! I was and still am impressed. Every episode, except the first episode with Shampoo getting all pissed were hilarious. I love it.
