If Paramount Pictures wants Beverly Hills Cop IV completed within the next two years, they're going to have to move forward without director Brett Ratner. He's been weighing his options between a new R-Rated Axel Foley installment and a re-imagining of Conan the Barbarian and the latter won out. Nu Image/Millennium and Lionsgate are prepping this to be a hard R-rated approach to Robert E. Howard's character with hopes of getting the film into theaters sometime in 2010.

Ratner liked what he saw within the Conan script by Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly, who looked to Robert E. Howard's original pulp stories of the 1930s to create their take on the character. The writers are doing a quick polish to incorporate some of Ratner's ideas.

Joe Gatta and Avi Lerner of Millennium Films are producing, along with Paradox Entertainment president and CEO Fredrik Malmberg.

Preproduction is already under way for the $85 million shoot at Nu Image's Nu Boyana Studio in Bulgaria with an eye towards making a new franchise of films based around the warrior.

"The story opens on the battlefield where Conan is born and tells the origin story that sets the stage for what will be the first of multiple films," Lerner said.

Darn you Ratner, Darn you to heck. You should have just done the Foley picture. No body cares about that, after the third movie destroyed the series.

Yeah Ratner's shitty ideas probably involve Conan falling for some trans-gender and playing Guitar Hero…

I'll go one better Almost… Ratner should just stick to shutting up and falling off the face of the planet.

I feel like I just got punched in the face. That piece of crap is going to ruin this. REH is rolling in his grave. HE SUUUUUCKS!!!

Plus - by 2010 they'll scale it back to PG13, and Chris Tucker will be cast in the role previously held by Grace Jones.

VICTORYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!! If the Rat is most than likely gonna have to skip on Beverly Hills Cop 4 that means he's also not going to be able to touch God of War. Yea baby, no Kratos for Ratner!!!!!!!!!! No Kratos for Ratner!!! Yes we can, yes we can!!

Sorry Conan fans. But hey at least they are going for a Hard R, so you got that going for you.

In Ratner I believe. Okay, he wouldn't have made my shortlist to direct this but I think he will deliver. Maybe I'm a little delirious that Conan is finally getting made. Nah, it isn't just that I've actually felt pretty optimistic since it was first rumored that Ratner was going to do this. I don't think Ratner is as bad as you guys make him out to be. And mark my words, this will be the film that'll change everyone's mind and give the Bret some credit.

Meanwhile God of War can die a slow death in development hell

I'd choose making Conan over BHIV as well, but i doubt that ratner is the guy to go to for this one. Peter Jackson would have had great, so would del toro (until he got on a fantasy kick), either way it's not Paul Anderson or Uwe Boll or McG so semi-joy there.

I love how everyone's "Ratner sucks!".

What, exactly, have the haters on these forums done with their lives? Right. That's what I thought. NOTHING.

Ratner shoots entertaining movies. Period. They also make a ton of money. So shut up.

With THAT said, I'm not sure he's the right fit for Conan.

“What, exactly, have the haters on these forums done with their lives? Right. That's what I thought. NOTHING.” Really, much drama? That’s your argument?

I love how idiots complain about geeks on a genre site being passionate about genre topics. The retarded irony has me rolling on the floor. I rarely say this to anyone on the internet cuz it is so ridiculously clichéd but "Get a life".

I, for one, have never ruined an X-Men film. You shut up.

Riiiiiight! That statement it is so innane and ignorant I can't even respond at a low enough level for you to understand.

Are you the bastard lovechild of Ratner to defend him so vehemently? Come on, you can tell us.

I have mixed feelings about this one...Ratner has never really been tested as a director yet so this might be the one.

A lot of you claim he wrecked X-Men but I don't think his direction sucked, I think the story sucked. Fox wanted to start dumping salaries and were killing off characters left and right. I mean, didn't Cyclops have about 10 seconds of screen time before he was killed? I've never been a big cyclops fan but he is one of the corner stone characters of X-Men.

What else has Ratner done beside Rush Hours 1 thru 50 and that movie with Salma Hayek which was the only bright spot of that whole film. Maybe Conan will be the one that puts him in the geek category as ultra cool!
