Resident Evil: Extinction came out on top on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, after the film pullled in 50.7 mil in its domestic theatrical run. War came in at No. 2 but topped Home Media Magazine's video rental chart with estimated rental earnings of 11.8 million, which is more than half of its 22.5 mil boxoffice take. Resident Evil generated an estimated $8.3 million in rental stores for a fifth-place bow and like any other week, we don't know the exact sales numbers pulled in unless Sony gives a press announcement on it.
A third newcomer, New Line's Shoot 'Em Up, landed in 4th place on the sales chart, right behind Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which jumped a notch the first week of the new year. This is the fourth week the film has been on the DVD market. and its fourth week in release. Shoot 'Em Up, which made just $12.8 million, debuted at No. 8 on the rental chart, but its estimated rental earnings of $7.7 million still amount to 60% of its theatrical gross.
The previous week's top seller, 20th Century Fox's The Simpsons Movie, slipped to No. 8 in its third week in stores. The Kingdom landed in 5th place while Rush Hour 3 followed in 6th place. Both films were released just before and after Christmas.
On the rental chart, Rush Hour 3 came in 2nd place with 11.1 million in revenue, while Kingdom was 3rd with 10.5 million.
