For the past year, the question of Bill Murray's participation (or lack thereof) has held up the production of Ghostbusters 3 over at Columbia Pictures. With that in mind, we knew that the possibility of "recasting" would come up sooner or later.

Co-creator and writer Dan Aykroyd made that clear late last year when he told the media that production for a third Ghostbusters would go on with or without Murray's involvement. Flash forward to this week and Dan is making that clear once again. While talking to Empire, here's what Aykroyd had to say on the possibility.

"We communicate frequently and his position on the involvement in 'Ghostbusters 3' has been made clear and I respect that," says Aykroyd

He also talked about the possibility of bringing Rick Moranis out of retirement for his respective character.

"If we can get the script to 'Ghostbusters 3' right, then it would definitely have Moranis as a major component. None of us would want to do the movie without having him as a participant."

If Bill Murray isn't on the screen, my butt isn't in the seat.

Bill Murray IS the Ghostbusters.  Otherwise, just let it go Aykroyd.  Sell your vodka, or make Spies Like Us 2.  I'm Chevy is always available.

BTW, Moranis retired.  I respect that.  Leave him be.  He made his dough and want to just hang out in the Great White North.  Only sequel he can make his own is B&D2.  You must have a flying dog.

Yes, InnerSanctum!  A Spies Like Us sequel would be the tits!

Eh, I think it's unfair to say that Bill Murray IS the Ghostbusters...don't get me wrong, I love Venkman, but I would be open to a movie without him...besides, the only reason Bill Murray played the role in the first place is because John Belushi died before they made it.  Seriously, originally "Ghostsmashers" involved Aykroyd and Belushi smashing ghosts throughout time and space in their spaceship...it was actually Ivan Reitman's idea to bring to present day New York.

That said, did anybody see the Family Guy episode called "Spies Reminiscent of Us"?  Aykroyd and Chase playing themselves as CIA operatives?...apparently Reagan was a fan of the movie too...LOL

Hey Dan Aykroyd ... some characters are iconic and should never be replaced.

We wouldn't accept the recasting of Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones.

Nor Bill Murray as Peter Venkman.

Hell bring him back as a Ghost that is a Ghostbuster hunting Ghosts !

Just DO NOT RECAST HIM EVER !

Go away somewhere together, lock yourselves in a room, work $h!t out, find a solution.

But please do not replace a character we have grown to love with another actor.

No Bill Murray, no paid box office ticket from me !

Tell us three more times how you REALLY feel, guygardner!  LOL...just messing with ya.  Anyway, I'm with you guys on the recasting aspect.  If Bill Murray won't be in it, write an explanation as to why he's not there and be done with it...DON'T RECAST HIM!  However, where in the above quote did it talk about recasting?  Did I miss something?  How does his non-involvement equate to recasting?  I think everybody is jumping the gun here.

After part 2 who cares anyway. Not a huge fan but I'd see a sequel even without Bill. They can write him off or just have someone else replace him of his position with the GB but not recasting the actual role, that would be a complete fail.

Then again if they were to make Will Ferrel look older he could pass as Bill Murray.

I say go ahead and do it, I love Bill but hate the idea of him dictating what happens at least according to some rumors over the past
