In 1988, British writer-producer Doug Naylor added the DNA of DOCTOR WHO to SF classics SILENT RUNNING and DARK STAR, and stirred in a dash of THE YOUNG ONES to craft the cult-favorite sci-fi series RED DWARF, recently released on DVD. Naylor co-created the British show with Rob Grant, who departed after series VI.
The show's eight series aired in the U.S. on PBS before surfacing on BBC America. At one point, early episodes were reworked with digital effects replacing the DOCTOR WHO-ish effects, producing fan outrage. Not to worry.
"The DVDs are the original shows," Naylor explains. "The pictures and sound have been cleaned up, but it's the original shows rather than the remastered shows. The feedback we got was that the fans wanted the original shows and so those are the shows we've gone with."
