Mania Interview: Iron Men (Article) - 5/1/2013 10:47:09 AM

Question for all my fellow maniacs, I've noticed in several cities near me, that the theaters are doing 9, 10 or even 11 pm screenings for this on May 2nd.  Not one mid-night screening in my area anyway and only 2 I've seen in a few outlying cities nearest me are having a 12:01 showing.  Has there been announcement that theaters are eliminating the mid-night screenings (probably stemming from the CO incident last summer)?

Gotta say if that's the case, that just pisses me off.  Changing things because 1 whack job did something terrible is BS.  Just because he chose the mid-night screening does not mean if they didn't have it at midnight, that he wouldn't planned it for any one of the other numerous screenings.

GAME OF THRONES: Kissed by Fire Review (Article) - 5/1/2013 10:41:22 AM

Wise, I don't think Hanso is trying to say that what Dany didn't wasn't the right thing to do, just that murder in any form is still morally wrong period.  You can justify it in any way we want to make us feel less guilty but bottomline is it's wrong.  It's the whole does the means justify the end debate.  She did the right thing, but it was still murder.  Technically you could make the arguement that she should have fried the entire Army of the Unsullied as they were all baby killers.  Orders or not, they did the deed.

Defiance: The Devil in the Dark Review (Article) - 5/1/2013 7:44:05 AM

ddiaz, I think you are confusing last week's episode for this week's. It was last week that Irisa was in the background with her freeing the dude who was being tortured.  This week's episode was all about her and her gift of "the sight."  She was front and center right from the beginning (literally, the show opens with his doing a kata on the roof).

DVD Shopping Bag: STNG: THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Blu-ray (Article) - 5/1/2013 7:12:55 AM

I priced matched this at Best Buy yesterday (Amazon had it for $14.99) and for some reason the gal at the register rang it up for $10!!  I did not correct her error.

I'm not so sure the tv trailers are a good litmus test for quality.  Usually those old bumpers are dubbed over and over (copies of copies) or even worse end up being pulled from VHS recordings from the original broadcast.  Not saying the transfer isn't amazing as it definitely is (as have been the transfers on all the TNG seasons so far).  But I see these episodes on SD or even upconverted HD stations on my U-Verse and while not as chrisp and clean as the blu-rays, they aren't nearly as bad as you'd think.

GAME OF THRONES: Kissed by Fire Review (Article) - 4/30/2013 8:32:30 PM

EIBaz, continuing your Star Wars correlation, Luke also lost his hand, and he made-out with his sister, okay maybe not as bad as what Jamie did, but still.  LOL!

Pacific Rim Official Wondercon Trailer (Article) - 4/30/2013 7:31:51 AM

Is that JJ Abrams in the white shirt and sloppy tie?  Sure as hell looks like him.

The Summer of '83: Something Wicked This Way Comes (Article) - 4/29/2013 7:45:24 AM

Can't say I've ever heard of this one but it sounds interesting enough.  Might be worth a look.

Mania Box Office Report: Iron Man 3 - World Numbers (Article) - 4/29/2013 7:13:01 AM

For some reason, the theater closest to me doesn't have tickets on sale for IM3 until Tuesday at the earliest (they say), so I still haven't gotten my midnight tickets, but will soon enough.

As for Man of Steel, I can't wait.  Not sure why everyone says they've gotten a late start in promoting it.  The teaser came out with TDKR last summer.  Just because we haven't been inundated with 30 different TV spots and endless clips showing practically the entire film, doesn't mean they don't know how to market the flick. The way they are doing it is "teasing" us with snip-its to build anticipation.  I don't think I've ever been more pumped to see a film...maybe the SW prequels, which admittedly sucked, but I have faith in Snyder when he does comic adaptations and Chris Nolan with, well, pretty much anything.

DVD Shopping Bag: Jurassic Park 3D Blu-ray (Article) - 4/23/2013 10:19:19 AM

Joel and Bob, just curious if you've found this to be the case or not, but I've now seen JP 3D Imax and that re-release of Raiders of the Lost Ark at the same Imax.  Both movies were saturated and the whites were overblown at times.  Also the images seem to have had a rather soft focus at times.  Have you noticed any of this at your screenings?  I've seen several other newer films there in Imax and/or Imax 3D, and that hasn't been a issue.  I'm assuming that the saturation, washed out look, and the fuzzy focus is part of the process they used to blow up the 35mm prints to the 70mm digital version in the Imax theater.

I had hoped that the 3D would add something to JP, but it really didn't.  Loved seeing the movie again on the big screen.  I think was 12 or 13 when it came out, so it's been a while since I've seen it in a theater.

Honestly, I'm not really a fan of all these 3D presentations that have been coming out in general.  The 3D in Avatar was good, but I really didn't care for the movie as a whole.  Tron Legacy, I think, has used the 3D technology the best.  It actually added to the depth of field in the movie and made it much more "real" world, at least to me.  Even the Hobbit pt1, the 3D didn't really do much for me and don't get me started o the disappointment of the 48fps gimmick.

The 3D converts really aren't worth the money.  The conversion process screws up the scale of the objects from what I've scene.  Like in Avengers, the helicopter at the beginning chase scene, the scale on that was just odd.  It made it look like a toy helicopter model, which took me out of the movie for a moment.  There's other instances but I won't go into them right now.

Just curious on your experiences.

TV Wasteland: Hemlock Grove (Article) - 4/22/2013 8:53:46 AM

Kara, that always bothered me about the news and it's one of the many, many reasons that I no longer work in TV News.  There's no need to cancel or interrupt regular programming (do a 1 minute cut-in, yes, but not continuous coverage) when we have 24-Hour News Channels, so those who want to watch, can flip over and watch the breaking news.  If you'd rather see your regular program, then don't change the channel.  I think you should give people the choice to watch what they want.  The severe weather stuff gets me too.  Put the info in the weather bug and crawl along the bottom of the screen and move on.  I don't want to stare at a radar map for hours on end as the storm passes.  Also, if it were that big of a deal, my power would be out and therefore wouldn't need all the tedious updates.
