It seems that Keanu Reeves may be the one to lead Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' live-action adaptation of Akira, reports the Hollywood Reporter. While younger names such as Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield and James McAvoy have been mentioned in recent reports regarding their upcoming feature film take of Katsuhiro Otomo's classic manga, the trade says there has been a meeting between Reeves and the director Albert Hughes. Albert will direct, based on a screenplay by Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, Gary Whitta and Steve Kloves.

If the deal gets done, Reeves would potentially play the role of Kaneda, a member of a biker gang in a cyberpunk dystopia.

Plot Concept: "Akira" is based on anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel masterwork. Previously adapted into a popular 1988 anime film, this version will take place in "New Manhattan," a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years ago. The famous motorcycle will also definitely be a part of the film.

It wouldn't surprise me...LOL.  Keanu just has a knack of getting into all kinds of awesome movies despite is almost total lack of acting ability.  I love soooo many movies he's in, but never because of him.  I'll bet a westernized, easier to understand Akira would make that list also.

I wouldnt see akira with Reeves attached- the charachters are high school students not middle aged men. I'd rather see keanu do a Constantine 2 or Cowboy bebop- hell anything would be better if he didnt do a bill and ted 3

 Preposterous.

This guy is leading the new 47 Ronin, why not put him in this too? And let's do another Zatoichi movie, with Keanu Reeves!  And.. and.... Seven Samurai! His amazing range would make him an awesome Kikucio!

And what's wrong with Bill & Ted 3? Most people have never let him live down the role of Ted Logan, so why not go back to it? I'll watch this now just to see Keanu play Kaneda.

Well Matrix was just like watching a live action anime. I just don't like the fact that they are casting white people as the leads (no offense), but they should keep it Asian or at least the lead roles.

raa2001, if you haven't been following this, they're making a westernized version of it set in Neo New York instead of Neo Tokyo.  Nothing wrong with white people, black people or asian people in this one.

But Kaneda is a teenager not a forty-something Dogstar bassist!

ultrazilla2000 5/9/2011 2:14:27 AM

SarcasticCaveman...that is true, and for most of the characters that is especially true.  But they sure as hell not cast a caucasian in the role of Akira himself, as that name is obviously Asian.

I see him as the older guy who tries to break the children out.  Hopefully he is not Kaneda.  This movie is far too hard to cast the only person I like would be Joseph Gordon Levitt for Tetsuo.
