Reign: The Obsession of Alexander Vol. #1

The Review!
Audio:

As most anime dvds do, this one contains both English and Japanese dialog. I watched this disc in the English dub version because I find the dub to be excellent, especially since the same voice actors from Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust do the voices. I did check out the Japanese version, and the voices didn't seem to be as good.

Video:

Being an ova, the video quality is excellent. There are no problems at all, nor did I notice any rainbows. As for the animation, I loved it right away, but there seems to be a lot of people don't like it because it is different. In my sense, it is nice to see a change once in a while, and this is a great one. It is pretty funny seeing the characters' underwear look like thongs due to the way they were designed.

Packaging:

The packaging is nice, has a picture of Alexander and a few Pythagorian members on it with a red background.

Menu:

The menu has Tokyo Pop's opening with the selections below it.

Extras:

The extras were pretty decent. There are trailers for the Reign movie, which I think was a compilation of the series put into a movie. Interviews with Peter Chung, and a few other people, an art gallery, Tokyo Pop trailers, and 1 or 2 other things.

Content:

I was waiting to see this series since I heard about it last year, and when I saw the picture of Reign, it looked weird. Thus it finally aired on Cartoon Network and I was hooked on it since the first episode.

The story starts out with King Philip II wanting to see his wife Olympia, who is in the middle of giving birth to a baby with the help of a snake. Years later Alexander is 16, and he is known as a disobeying coward, but that soon rumor soon comes to an end. Alexander is gathered by followers, who also become his friends, and thus their adventures begin.

This volumes introduces:

Aristotle: Alexander's teacher
Cassandra: Aristotle's niece
Ptolemy, Cleitus, Haspheastion, Philotas: all arefollowers of Alexander
Attalos: one of Philip's advisors
Euridices: Attalos' daughter
King Philip II: King of Macedonia
Olympia: mother of Alexander, pagan priestess
Darius III: King of Persia
Pythagorean Assassins: Members of the Pythagorean School

Now I'm not going to say this series is for everyone, because it isn't, but I recommend you at least give it a try and don't judge it by it's animation style and homosexual tendicies a lot of people notice. Either rent this volume, or watch it on Cartoon Network before you decide. You may enjoy the deep story, and grow to like the art style.
