John C. Reilly is gearing up to put on some fangs in the upcoming vampire fantasy CIRQUE DU FREAK, reports the Hollywood Reporter. Reilly, John Hutcherson and Chris Kelly are in negotiations to topline the fantasy for Universal Pictures. Reilly would play Larten Crepsley, a centuries-old vampire and owner of a giant spider named Madame Octa. Paul Weitz will be directing based on a screenplay he wrote while Lauren Schuler Donner is set to produce the flick.

Plot Concept: The story follows two best friends (Hutcherson, Kelly) who visit an illegal freak show, where an encounter with a vampire and a giant deadly spider forces them to make life-changing choices that result in vampire servitude and vampirism itself.

What are they kidding? Casting Reilly as a vampire would be like casting Homer Simpson as...well a vampire, actually.

I don't know...i mean this sounds like a pretty cheesy movie, having Reilly as a vampire seems to fit well.
I mean "life-changing choices that result in vampire servitude and vampirism itself"....i can see this being a movie where they have to fight for their (un)life and do servant jobs for Reilly, with the winner turning into a vampire and the loser becoming his first victim.
At the end it gives some cheesy line like "coming soon, to your house - For Your Blood!!"

I'm assuming that this is supposed to be a comedy. Because the moment I thought of Reilly as a vampire I had to laugh. I'm usually easy to please, but this one is going to be a hard sell for me.

I don't know... Reilly *is* a hell of an actor. Besides, Lost Boys had Edward frickin' Hermann as a vampire, for God's sake! I could see this go either way.

I love this guy. One of my favorite movie exchanges of all times is in Boogie Nights where he says "You ever see that movie Star Wars? ... People tell me I look like Han Solo."

I'm under the assumption this is a comedy.

Even if it isn't a comedy, I'm sure it will have some comedic moments and not be some overly dark drama/thriller.

Unfortunately, I read the book. It's not a comedy. And it completely sucked, pun intended. That said, Reilly's a very good choice for the charachter. He could pull it off. The question is whether the script and the movie are *worth* pulling off. Just the thought that the book was published annoys me, it was so bad.

Anyone remember that movie from the mid-90s starring Alex Winter (Bill from Bill & Teds) called Freaked? That movie was so funny. Stupid but funny. Thats kind of what it reminds me of a little, with a vampire twist. And let as not forget the original moves, Freaks. That movie is effed up....One of Us, One of Us.
