Renegade selling stake in movie to fans

Renegade Motion Pictures is selling shares of it's upcoming horror film, Autumn, to fans as a way to boost the budget.

AUTUMN, written David Moody and directed by Steven Rumbelow, is the first in a series of novels about a post-apocalyptic world following a sudden viral epidemic.  The series has developed a cult following on the Internet and Renegade wants to give the already established fans and the future fans a chance to own part of the film, which will also include part of the film’s future profits.  Renegade plans to sell 25% of the film, staring with investments as low as $20.

Incentives for investors include things like dinner with selected cast and crew or a private screening for the investor and 20 of their family and friends, again, with selected cast and crew.  There is also a Party Package that gives the investor access to wrap parties and other events.  Other packages include inscribed Diesel Time pieces or inscribed leather Converse.

"This is not your normal blood and guts zombie movie, it is more of a psychological look at human nature in an apocalyptic environment," Rachel Haughenberry told Mania.com.   "We are taking an unconventional route in raising our budget by including the fans in the investment process."

Investment packages for the movie are available not only on the Renegade website, but also a friend to indie films Cinema Nocturna and AUTUMN author David Moody’s site.  Packages start at $20 and go up from there.

KJ's Take:  This is just a damn cool way to involve the fans.  Runblow is relatively unknown, though he did work on a series titled Beyond which can be found on the Space Channel.  He's done a lot of smaller horror productions as well.  Interesting to keep an eye on and if anyone buys a stake, let me know how it goes.

If a whole lot of people buy stake in the film, and go see it, wouldn`t they essentially just be making their money back? Well, unless the movie does big numbers, which is highly doubtful.

KJ, I believe you horribly misspelled Rumbelow's name in your Take. I'm kinda excited by this idea. Could be a great mechanism to help push a film that's close to moving forward "over the top."

I'm guessing that was a joke, since the name was spelled right in the article above. I believe someone did this before. Don't remember the movie, but I think they ran in to trouble with the MPAA or someone. They were trading investments for Associate Producer listing in the end credits or something like that and some Hollywood guild of some sort got their panties in a bunch saying that a producer had to actually *do* something to get film credit. Hell, if I did something like this, I'd settle for getting my name in the credits as "$25 Investor." Just to have my name in the credits of a movie would be cool.

I've never heard of these novels, but this is an excellent promotional idea. If you invest alot would that allow you creative input?

I just bought a share (20.00 can). It was easy, it took about 5 minutes. Also if you are like me and didn't have a paypal account, it's an easy way to sign up for that as well. Now I can say I own a movie (well 1/100,000, 000th of one anyway) lol.
