Here's a Hollywood fact we've learned over the years. It doesn't matter how many movies produced for any given franchise, if that franchise makes decent profits there's a good chance the studio will want another sequel. Even if the cast or main star tells you "This is the final chapter."

Following this example, Ryan Rotten (via Shock Til You Drop) has confirmed that a fourth installment of the live-action Resident Evil franchise is gearing up at the offices of Sony and Capcom.

The fourth film, currently titled Resident Evil: Afterlife, is being discussed internally within Sony with a theatrical launch set for September 17, 2010. This latest news comes after executive producer-director Paul W.S. Anderson confirmed last fall that he had a story in mind and was writing a script.

While it's still too early in the game to know which stars would be returning to this next installment, Resident Evil: Extinction co-star Ali Larter has indicated she would love to take her Claire Redfield character into new territory. And with the third film's ending it's safe to say that Milla Jovovich could return to her Alice character.

Sony's genre branch, Screen Gems, handles the distribution for the franchise. As with many of their theatrical releases they've managed to keep each entry's price tag low while taking in $379.4 million worldwide for the trilogy.

Haven't watched one yet, and I don't think making a 4th movie would change that...

Unless Milla Jovovich is a busy actress in Europe of course she'll do another one.

I can't say you are missing much fft but to each their own.  It obviously has a big enough following that they can make movie number 4.

All in all they are quite watchable.  But I hope they don't start following the Star Trek rules.  First one was great, second was not so much, 3rd was great.  Let's hope that the 4th is good..

I've got the RE trilogy in my library and seeing how RE: Extinction ended I can't wait to see how the story progresses in RE: 4. I'll definately be seeing this one in theatres.

Screen Gems ain't done raping Resident Evil. RE films are disgrace/joke to the Capcom Resident Evil franchise. Capcom apparently doesn't give a flying FUCK of what is being done to their franchises on screen as long as they are getting paid.

Pass on this and go play Resident Evil 4 instead, the best of the RE franchise.

Hanso, you are a bitter, bitter man. Lol

Of course Mila will be back this is the only thing keeping her "career" alive and Larter wants to find a way out of Heroes but after Obsessed, acting her way out isn't an option, so RE is all she has left.

These films are major fun, who cares if they don't follow the games?  Besides, what would be the point then?  If you played the games you'd know every plot point in the movies and then there wouldn't be any fun in them.  A hell of a lot more interesting than seeing Saw part fifteen...

hannibalking 7/2/2009 11:38:05 AM

I don't mind that they don't follow the games, but I sure as hell don't like that they have a character like Alice overshadowing Leon, Jill, Claire, Chris and the rest of the gang.

hanso 7/2/2009 12:09:10 PM

I've read the Harry Potter books and I've seen the movie yet they are still fun.  I've read LOTR and seen the films, and they still fun.  So wny would they sticking to the game plots be any different?

Kalonthar you are right man.  I don't know why the hell they created Alice when they had the Redfields, Jill and Leon to use.  Had they used Chris we would've seen some awesome Chris vs. Wesker action in one of the sequels.  They should've developed Leon and have the Plagas in one of the movies.

Capcom just let's their shit get raped.  See Street Fighter for further proof.  Main character is Ryu, none of the films have centered on him.
