Revisiting Goldsmith's ALIEN NATION
By: Randall LarsonDate: Tuesday, May 17, 2005
Varese Sarabande Records has announced its limited edition "CD Club" releases for May. The five new releases, limited to between 1000 and 3000 copies, are headlined by the first-ever release of Jerry Goldsmith's rejected score for 1988's ALIEN NATION. Goldsmith had composed and recorded a score for Graham Baker's science fiction cop film, which starred James Caan as an LA cop forced to contend with a world that is slowly being repopulated by an alien race. in the process, though, Baker (who Goldsmith had worked with on THE OMEN: FINAL CONFLICT in 1981), and the film's producers ultimately chose to reject Goldsmith's score and hurriedly replace it with a new score by composer/music editor Curt Sobel (Goldsmith's music remained in the film's trailer, though).
ALIEN NATION, as was RUNAWAY (1983) and CRIMINAL LAW (1985), is an entirely synthesized score, once again performed by its composer. "Ever the experimentalist, Goldsmith was fascinated by the technology and infused even his keyboard scores with his unparalleled musicianship and we can hear the composer shine through in every note," said Varese Sarabande producer Robert Townson. "Though neither the films nor scores would be ranked alongside the composer's major opuses, there's always fun to be had in a Goldsmith score."
The CD is available for ordering now, limited to 3000 copies.
The other four Club releases for this month are Alex North's DESIREE (1954 period romance starring Marlon Brando as Napoleon and Jean Simmons as Desiree; limited to 2000 copies), Basil Poledouris' MAKING THE GRADE, a youth comedy film from 1984; 1000 copies), and Elmer Bernstein's rousing 1965 Western score for THE HALLELUJAH TRAIL (3000 copies). Also available now at reduced price through the CD Club, prior to its official release this summer, is Elmer Bernstein's score for the Bill Murray comedy, STRIPES.
