Revolutionary Girl Utena Vol. #03: The Black Rose Blooms
By Chris Johnson
April 13, 2003
Release Date: November 12, 2002
I know that Utena is old, so I guess this was pretty good, but in lots of places it looked a little soft. The colors were much bolder then the Rose Collections, but they still seem a little light. Everything is clearer though, but I can't compare it to the r2's since I still have yet to see one.
It was clear. Not much more needs to be said. With no fancy equipment, I just listened to it. I didn't expect it to be different even with better setups.
The picture looks pretty nice, better then the aweful Rose Collections. It has Utena and Anthy in a embrace sort of thing. There are red roses on the side that quickly fade away, and a nicer but still not perfect english logo. The japanese text by the side was nice, since sometimes I can't tell what symbols are which in the jap. logo since it's so darn loopy.
It comes in a 'frosted' dvd case, with the reverse being a B&W picture, and cast info. Because the case isn't clear, it is easier to take out the insert if you want to actually read it.
The back only has 3 screenshot, which could have been chosen better.
It was OK, but not excellant. It has the rose border thing from the movie going on with some parts of the TV episode in the background. They could have chosen better scenes to have playing. Pictures from the ld release also fade in and out at the bottom right corner as it plays.
I dislike how they set things up, with 'Disc Set-up' being first, then 'movie' (is it really hard just to make it 'PLAY'?!) and then 'extras', then 'previews' which I think should be in extras.
Then, in the scene selection they have the english dub of the Shadow Girls playing which is HORRIBLE. When I'm watching (my brothers already dislike anime) it makes the show seem pretty stupid when I go to the Extras menu and some badly acted english voice shouts out "EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA", or the scene selection starts going "I'm doomed! My secret is known to everyone!" Ugh. Stick to just music in other releases.
Whoopee. This was OK but not great. Aside from the previews of other CPM titles (almost all the previews were on other Utena discs already)... they had an interview with the director, the storyline... etc. But what I hated the MOST was this incredibly stupid clip of the Big Apple Anime Fest. I watched it, and it's a 10 second clip of the words 'Big Apple Anime Fest' flying on the screen. How about some more information? When exactly it will be, what will be going on there, etc.? It was a stupid stupid thing just so it looks like there are more extras there.
Would it KILL a company to make a music video from the show as an extra? C'mon now...
I've been sucked into Utena and can't seem to get back out. It IS such a great great series. This is the ONLY series that I will pay $30 for 3 episodes for (the upcoming Black Rose DVDs). It was stupendous. I can't wait for even more.
Now, there's another category this release should have...
They looked SO much better then the Rose Collection's... (think Utena movie) and they were easier to read... but honestly now, who translates these? Does CPM PURPOUSLY try to reword everything?
They changes so many lines of dialogue, and don't get me started on the songs. Too late. In english you can clearly hear them saying "THREE TWO ONE ZERO, BLAST OFF!" in episode 2... but they somehow get "TEN TWO ONE ZERO, BLAST OFF!". There were so many other just plain mistranslated.
Utena songs are supposed to have wierd lyrics... they can't change them to be more normal. "Twin relations ships are..." should NOT be put as "The eternal opposing relationship."! Gawd, I hate these translations so bad. If it weren't for me wanting good video quality of utena I'd be skipping over these.
I hope they change this all for the upcoming sagas, because I downright can't stand the way they are now. I'm considering even jumping over the rest of the Black Rose DVDs (only 3 episodes? That's pathetic. Even for Utena I'd have to think twice now.)
Other then that, Utena is a great series. CPM is cleaning up their Utena releases, but still lack alot. I hope they get better very soon.
