Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - Apr 10, 2008 - 04:44am
with all due respect..."There Will Be Blood" was a great movie but in no way did it get screwed where the best picture Oscar is concerned, it was not better than "No Country..." now, had Daniel Day-Lewis not gotten the best actor award....riots in the street my friend and I would have been there with my pitchfork.

Verheiden Talks TEEN TITANS and BSG - Apr 03, 2008 - 03:01pm
Whiskeymovie...it's different than Firefly. I'm not sure I'd compare the two...at all. (doing so just because they are both sci fi serves the mentality that makes it so tough to get non genre types to watch shows like BSG) as far as tomorrow night goes, having just finished re-watching season 1 in high def on UHD, the return is going to be bitter sweet as I don't get Sci Fi HD. but hey, I'll get over it.

Verheiden Talks TEEN TITANS and BSG - Apr 03, 2008 - 08:04am
My only concern appearing on the BSG horizon is that they will build so much up and not be able to deliver. I never realized until I watched a recent interview with Ronald D. Moore that it is not a finite series (a la B5.) Yes they are ending it after season 4 yes, but by choice, not design. But I believe it's a fantastic show and I have complete faith they will "bring it home" in satisfying fashion. After his work on TNG and DS9 followed by this, I'd say he's building quite the legacy as a generational sci fi steward. As for Teen Titans, I can't speak much to the book for the last decade or so (I was a casualty of the "great upheaval" in the '90s) but the characterizations and storytelling from the original Wolfman / Perez New Teen Titans years would provide good source material...particularly the Judas Contract.

Alternate Endings - Mar 25, 2008 - 05:26am
"Has any film ever made a sequel where the main character, who died, now survives in alternate ending then gets a sequel with him alive in it?" Godzilla... and he didn't need any damn alternate ending. he was just that much of a badass 8)

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Season 3 - Mar 21, 2008 - 05:28am
I've recently had an unsettling revelation about this series...it doesn't seem to hold up. I got started late and tore through the first season a couple years ago to catch up with my friends and continued from there with mad anticipation for every episode (like many others I'm sure.) When the chance arose to go back through it all in hi-def, I was ecstatic. Thus far I have not made it all the way through an entire episode. The re-broadcast is just reaching the end of season 1 so granted, I'm in no way ready to give up but I am puzzled by the lack of appeal. To put this into perspective, I'm currently on my nth pass through Babylon 5 and I can throw a DVD from Firefly, VM, any season of TNG not named "1", etc. on and enjoy just about any episode that pops up so I don't usually have a problem with genre retreads. Again, it's early, I'll let season 2 get started and rolling well before I give up but as it stands now, I just can't sit through the episodes. Mind you...I'm not bashing the show...far from it. I'm just trying to figure out what's going on here.

Joker's Girlfriend, Superman Returns & Beyond! - Feb 29, 2008 - 05:32am
Lance actually guested on Jericho a couple of weeks ago. As for what else he's done, IMDB is your friend.

WB Preparing JUSTICE LEAGUE for 2009 - Feb 27, 2008 - 07:19am
Jarrod I agree that it makes sense to do the individuals first before the group but by doing that you automatically make the potential group picture difficult. Since one of the main complaints regarding Justice League seems to be the absence of Batman and Superman performed by their recognized actors, you can't win. If you leave the characters out, people don't like it, if you include them with different actors, people don't like it, if you do use the recognized performers, you weaken the profitability of the film (due to the cost) and good God can you imagine the ego clashes and the amount of script rewrites it would take to make everyone happy? That said, I don't really see Marvel heading for an Avengers movie. The X-men are a group first, they were created that way, not an amalgam of already established characters. Now yes I appreciate the majority of the Avengers had only been in existence for about a year if that when the group was created, but it's still a group of individuals and not an individual group. All that aside, as an acknowledged DC fanboy, I don't even feel a little excitement for this film. But I desperately want to be proved wrong.

Toshiba to Drop HD DVD? - Feb 15, 2008 - 09:34pm
any thought I had of DVDs disappearing anytime soon was shot down when I got my new tv recently. even through a regular Philips DVD player (non-upconverting) they look fantastic. the big budget spectacles...sure, I'll want to see those in high-def but for all the rest I'll save my pennies and buy 'em on DVD for years to come.

Arnett Replaced by Val Kilmer for K.I.T.T - Feb 07, 2008 - 06:22am
the use of a Ford for this role is bad enough but that poor choice might possibly be lessened now if we can hear KITT sing "how silly can you get" just one time. heck, that could be this show's theme song.

Gibbons' Second Part of WATCHMEN Set Visit - Dec 24, 2007 - 05:45am
Metalwater, I don't know if I agree with your view of Watchmen or not so I'll leave that be (plus I'm not drunk so any opinion I might have on that subject would apparently be automatically invalidated.) 8) But your citing of the Wolfman / Perez Titans, the late 70s - early 80s X-men, and the Levitz, Giffen (and others) LSH is like someone looking into my mind. good call

New K.I.T.T Car Polished & Ready to Roll - Dec 13, 2007 - 10:32pm
but...it's...a...Ford I mean really, I'm not tryin' to hate here but... seriously they ruined the show before it even airs how 'bout Daewoo? yeah, we could do that!

New K.I.T.T Car Polished & Ready to Roll - Dec 13, 2007 - 01:24pm
Hmm, they made it a Ford...ah well, at least that's one less TV movie / potential show I'll have to keep up with in the future. Hell, A Suzuki Aerio would have been more appropriate.

Digital Destruction - Dec 07, 2007 - 07:40am
Merin, my point is about the money. I'm not saying that if I give my book to a friend the powers that be wouldn't love to find a way to stop that but they just realistically can't. I'm sure that practice could be construed as improper under the "unauthorized reproduction and distribution without express written...etc...etc" mantra. And mentioning the free distribution of music is a red herring, if you as the artist / creator choose to do so then by all means, it's fine and there's nothing wrong with that. But if the material you choose to obtain has an established distribution method with rules and regs attached (however backward looking and inane they may be) and you circumvent that method....well....you stole it.

Digital Destruction - Dec 06, 2007 - 05:39pm
I think it's important to distinguish that if I loan my friend a comic, dvd, cd, book, whatever, I have lost the use of it during that time. There is still only one of that item (the one I originally purchased) and still only one person using it. That's not what happens when I reproduce the object in some way and give it to someone where now two of us have full use with only one purchase still having been made. Believe me, I am absolutely the biggest hypocrite on the planet where this is concerned but it doesn't mean I cannot try and be objective about it. Besides, I'm welcome to start creating my own comics, movies, songs, and stories anytime I like and give them away for free with full rights to duplicate and distribute as anyone sees fit. Funny how I don't find myself terribly motivated to do that (mostly because I'm a no-talent having squid but I digress.)

Digital Destruction - Dec 05, 2007 - 10:04pm
Merin, I read the article you posted, thank you for that. I was especially moved (sorry if that exaggerates) by the part that mentions the scanner's "love" of comics. It's true. The idea that these are a bunch of individuals who loathe the medium and wring their hands in glee at the hopes of tearing it all down are ludicrous. I participate in the community referenced in that story, a community which has recently been rocked by a DMCA takedown uppercut to the noggin (ok, the "rockee" was a more or less renegade offshoot of the original but I consider it all the same community anyway.) I participate for access to the old stuff, the stuff from my youth, most of which I own but prefer a digital copy that is easy to pull up and leaf through. Now with all that said...the fact is it's stealing. Doesn't matter if the book is a month old or 30 years old, I don't see a distinction. If you don't have the permission to copy and reproduce the work, you shouldn't be doing it. I'm old enough to remember a time when we downloaded mp3s from websites full of just random links. No Napster, no BitTorrent, just basic (poorly laid out) websites with links to song so-and-so. Just because there weren't even a hundredth of the people doing it then as are now doesn't make it any less the truth that we were stealing. As far as impact to the industry goes, I'm not sure how it can be argued that the scanning of books even a year out doesn't lead to the "well, it will be free in a year so I'll just wait" mentality. Once you're on the cycle so to speak, it's like they're new. I mean c'mon, it's not that hard to stay out of the present where comic storylines are concerned if you really try. Anyway, I've managed to vacillate between both sides in this rant so I have zero credibility and to be honest, after the nightmare of the early to mid 90s and the way the fans were pimp slapped repeatedly by the comic industry, I can't say I feel all that sympathetic for them, karma's a bitch. But it's a great discussion about a great art form, keep it going....

SMALLVILLE: Kara - Oct 06, 2007 - 07:19am
After season 4 nearly killed the show, I myself "limped" through season 5 but 6 was enjoyable for the most part and I felt maybe they were on an upswing heading to the end. If this is any indication...maybe not. The show's link to the mythos has always been tenuous at best but season 6 gave the feeling they had made a statement...stop looking at your old comic books! This is all free form now! At least that's how it felt to me and I was glad for it. Anyway, just one episode, maybe just given some time.....maybe.

Warner Bros Takes on DRAGON Remake - Aug 10, 2007 - 08:11pm
re: #27, sorry galaga51, ya lost me there bro. I know the movie Galaxy Quest but I was talking about Van Damme's first flick (that I know of.) unless that was just a little subtle humor...too subtle apparently for a brick like myself 8) if the most recent posts are correct and the movie isn't going to use the original title and won't be the same story...well I guess I'm out of stuff to bitch about!

Warner Bros Takes on DRAGON Remake - Aug 10, 2007 - 07:22am
"Bloodsport?" nah, let's go straight to Van Damme's roots and remake "No Retreat, No Surrender," the movie that truly demonstrated his latent thespian chops! I'll cast my vote in the leave it alone camp... and hey Sharpe95th....love the name! (I'm on the third book now)

Two Major DARK KNIGHT Rumors - Jul 09, 2007 - 11:23pm
I thought going with Ra's al Ghul in the first movie was great, take a good Batman character unknown to the "outsiders" and make it work. they did. I see no reason to stop that. Joker...yes, do it..after Alan Moore, you have to. The rest (Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, etc.) forget about them. Two Face falls in between I suppose, I can take him or leave it.

JERICHO Falls? - May 21, 2007 - 05:01pm
hope for that "movie of the week" I fantasized about? who knows... mediabiz .blogs. cnnmoney.com/2007/05/21/angry-jericho-fans-think-cbs-is-nuts/#comments referring to this remark: Thank you for supporting Jericho with such passion. We truly appreciate the commitment you made to the series and we are humbled by your disappointment. In the coming weeks, we hope develop a way to provide closure to the compelling drama that was the the Jericho story. Sincerely, Nina Tassler, President of CBS Entertainment we can only hope.

JERICHO Falls? - May 16, 2007 - 07:14am
Bah! guess McRaney knew what was coming! ah well, ratings are ratings, as much as I and some of the others here love the show, there just aren't enough of us I guess. maybe CBS will be good enough to give us a tv movie next year that resolves the Jericho - New Bern battle and the military's arrival.

NBC Announces HEROES: ORIGINS - May 14, 2007 - 09:29pm
after reading more closely, I don't think it's over the summer, I'm thinking the six episodes will air during the next regular season, so my "death beating" theory is wrong.

NBC Announces HEROES: ORIGINS - May 14, 2007 - 08:29pm
whether good or bad idea it stinks of desperation. as I understand, their idea to stay off the air so long this spring backfired and did not do good things to the ratings. so in a classic example of overcompensation, they're going to beat us to death with the show over the summer.

"Jericho: One If By Land" - Apr 27, 2007 - 06:40am
Great show, just great. Jericho is Lost for the people who missed out on Lost (me). I have no desire to go back and catch up to be a "a part" of the whole thing. Now I have my own little "where the hell are they going with this?" show every week. A lot of it may be my age, growing up in the '80s, the post nuclear exchange fantasy drama was a common component of our RPGs and Sci Fi content so there's a resonance on that level. You say "it's no Lost or Heroes"....well, I've met Heroes Mr. Lost, and you are no Heroes. ;)

Day Break is Done! - Mar 05, 2007 - 05:31pm
"Doesn’t this channel have something to do with “classic” movies?" no, it doesn't. it hasn't for several years now. they don't use the word "classic" in their title any longer, the channel is called AMC and that's all they refer to themselves as.

More Genre Goodness on the Way - Feb 25, 2007 - 06:26am
wow, didn't series 2 of Life on Mars just start? and they're already doing a cross pond remake? the first series really was something else, heck, I'd be happy to see them just broadcast it over here, no remaking necessary.

Day Break Gets a Date - Jan 21, 2007 - 06:57pm
alright, maybe picking on the spelling is petty but I agree about the editing standards, at least make an effort. and by the way, it's DRESDEN....http://www.scifi.com/dresden/.... ok? and this isn't the first time it's been misspelled here. that's not being petty, that's the name of one of the shows you're talking about!

Holiday Movies to Replace the Reruns - Nov 27, 2006 - 08:35am
ah snallygaster...truly, there can be only one version, that being the magnificent 1951 "Scrooge" with Alastair Sim........... but laugh me out of the room, I still watch Bill Murray's "Scrooged" every year, I don't know why, I just do........... and color me perplexed as well on the omission of "It's a Wonderful Life", it never gets old........... you wanna rag on "A Christmas Story?" go ahead! I TRIPLE DOG DARE YOU! ;)

This Week's Premieres in Preview - Oct 02, 2006 - 02:16pm
I'll second, third, whatever the above...the breakdown of the week to come was a much looked forward to Monday morning tradition of sorts for me as I ate my cheerios (honey nut of course, I'm not a communist) and try to come to terms with another week of work. Lord knows TiVo tries but there are still things I would have missed if I hadn't seen them mentioned here.

This Week's Premieres in Preview - Oct 02, 2006 - 07:04am
so is TV wasteland gone now? I don't recall a goodbye message or anything and we're well into the new season of television now. what gives?

Blade has been canceled - Oct 02, 2006 - 07:02am
for what it's worth, those of you who didn't stick with it really missed out. the early episodes weren't so hot and I had given up as well. I'm not sure what made me "catch up" when they ran the little marathon a few weekends ago but I'm glad I did. ah well, it won't be the last time a networkling gives up when a new series doesn't pull major ratings right off the bat leaving no time for it to grow into its own.

Rainbow: "Live In Dsseldorf 1976" to Arrive In November - Sep 22, 2006 - 02:12pm
we'll leave my age out of this but yes, I am quite familiar with Mr. Dio and his contemporaries. Billy Idol did a snazzy video filled with post apocalyptic themes. how 'bout 2112? Mr. Roboto, there's sci-fi. Iron Maiden? Dokken? lots of fantasy based stuff, is that all that is required to make it a topic of genre entertainment conversation? I appreciate your point and to an extent you are of course correct, I just don't see that it fits in here, but I can just ignore it.

Rainbow: "Live In Dsseldorf 1976" to Arrive In November - Sep 22, 2006 - 07:26am
what in the hell has this got to do with Cinescape? maybe it's time to edit that "who we are" bit here at the website... "Mania Entertainment intends to reach the millions of fans of science fiction, fantasy, horror, animation and comic content"

The Advantages of Digital Comics and Why I Will Never Like Them - Sep 13, 2006 - 07:12am
Kurt, all points you make are perfectly valid, but let me just play devil's advocate by saying you haven't done comics digitally until you display them a page at a time on a 24" widescreen monitor rotated to portrait mode! 8)

Pilot Fishing, part 1 - Aug 28, 2006 - 06:21am
if you want something to do with your current Saturday nights (can't help with the fall), you might give the Sharpe's TV movies a shot on BBC America. caught my first by accident and haven't missed one since, very good stuff. unfortunately, the series began at the start of July and I believe has only two installments left. yes, it's historical drama and not something I would normally even bring up in a conversation at Cinescape but since the column spent two-thirds of its time talking about law / cop dramas, I figured what the heck. :)

SNAKES ON A PLANE - Aug 24, 2006 - 08:24am
"you ain't never seen my movies? Deep Blue? they ate me, a fu**** shark ate me!" it is interesting to wonder how many people who otherwise would have very much enjoyed the movie probably won't see it simply due to hype burnout. if you watch G4 at all (and the Star Trek 2.0 action figure commercials are reason enough to do that), you know what I'm talking about when I say hype burnout.

McMahon only the voice of Dr. Doom? - Aug 02, 2006 - 08:01am
heck, I saw the link and thought they meant VINCE Mcmahon 8) now who better to be Doctor Doom....really?

Sword of Truth, Dragonlance, & More - Jul 20, 2006 - 02:28pm
no Pat, kudos to you for not tearing me a new one over such a pedantic post. ;) I knew darn well what you meant, the gap between the "trilogy" and the "uniogy" (wasn't Flame supposed to be another three books?) is long enough to keep people from making the association. I wonder if Weis and Hickman's appearance at Comicon will get any air on G4, that said, I wonder if G4's coverage is going to be worth bothering with at all. now I'm just rambling.

Sword of Truth, Dragonlance, & More - Jul 19, 2006 - 08:04pm
||another beloved epic is rising from the ashes after almost 20 years of dormancy|| 20 years?! Dragons of Summer Flame was '95 / '96 wasn't it? did I fall asleep or something? ;)

1983 Animated DUNGEONS & DRAGONS coming to DVD - Jul 19, 2006 - 07:09am
oh wow, the shogun warriors, those were great! I think I remember Danguard Ace and Starvenger, were those two of them? seems like they were 60 or 90 minute cartoons that would come on Showtime (or HBO or maybe it was still Showcase back then). or am I beginning to mush things together in my memory?

A Rose By Any Other Name... - Jul 10, 2006 - 07:00am
ummm...the "gates"?

SERENITY long script on EBAY - Jul 08, 2006 - 09:22am
Yes they will drag me out and hang me for this, but it must be said. It's time to start looking at Star Wars big picture style. Considering what the long lens of history shows it to be...1 really fun movie, 1 really great movie, and 4 pieces of crap...not living up to a comparison as the "next Star Wars" is a relief. It means not driving a fun concept into the ground and then backing over it with a dump truck several times. (and for the record, I don't fault Lucas for that, if I'm stupid enough to keep watching them / buying them, he'd be a fool not to keep making them) I enjoyed Firefly and Serenity, I'm happy to see them go to rest as they are. Joss may have dreamed of a 4 year series and 3 movies (I don't know) but there doesn't seem to be enough desire, move on.

The Wasteland Awards 2005-06 - Jun 05, 2006 - 05:46am
good point about "Earl" and as much as I enjoy BSG, it belongs in that empty fourth spot for returning series. That category belongs to Veronica Mars (you just need to get watchin').

STAR WARS Fans Up In Arms - May 30, 2006 - 10:37pm
>>So many fans have requested the original movies, we wanted to find a way to bring them to you. But since these movies do not represent George's artistic vision, we could not put the extraordinary time and resources into this project as we did with the Special Editions.
