Review: Aliens Vs. Predator: Requiem

(Sat 04/19/2008 05:37pm)

I'm expecing many "Dude it's only a movie" responses to this post.

I went in to watching Aliens Versus Predator: Requiem (AVP-R) with admittedly low expectations. AVP was a watered-down version of a true AVP film, and I didn't even bother watching the "extended" version on DVD. When word of the Strause brothers (whose work I was not familiar with) working on making AVP-R a hard R-rated horror flick I wasn't terribly impressed, and even less so upon learning the film takes place immediately after AVP.

The heart of the movie of course involves lots of aliens running around a small town in Colorado. A Predator "cleaner," (dubbed "Wolf" by the filmmakers) comes to Earth to track down the outbreak and eliminate all evidence. Wolf must also combat a Predator-Alien hybrid creature running loose, and eliminate humans who unfortunately get in between him and his goal. Said humans are a rag tag bunch of random faces, and while Steven Pasquale and Reiko Aylesworth are familiar faces, none of the actors involved make much of their roles.

Yeah, that's it to the plot. Sure, the army gets involved late in the film (which I will discuss later as one of the MANY examples of faulty logic in the film), but it's essentially a sequence of scream, run, bleed, kill, roar, and repeat.

WARNING!!! My review includes many potential SPOILERS within the film, so if you haven't seen the film and do not want to read about specific scenes and/or deaths within the film, PLEASE DO NOT READ ANYTHING BELOW. Fair enough? Okay, thanks.

So here's my first problem with the film. Wolf receives a distress call from the Predator ship after the hybrid runs loose and kills the remaining Predators on board, forcing the ship to crash on Earth. The growth of the hybrid creature is amazing, far faster than any chestburster included in any previous film featuring the Aliens. For the sake of argument, let's say it grew so quickly because of being combined with Predator DNA. How in the world did Wolf travel from the Predators homeworld to Earth in less than a 24-hour period? Just how fast do these Predator ships travel? It's a small point, but I had to ask.

Moving along, the first victims to facehuggers are a father and son. There was a lot of hype about a kid giving birth to an Alien, and I didn't see the big deal. I didn't care about the father or the kid, so the whole death was done really for shock value. The death didn't add anything to the film, and I don't like adding a kid's death simply because it's "cool".

Speaking of odd deaths, there's the gruesome scene in the hospital. The hybrid somehow ends up in a hospital and finds its way into a maternity ward. It finds a woman about to give birth and uses its pincers to grasp the woman, laying several eggs inside her. She eventually gives "birth" to three "wombbursters," and I assume she still dies in the process. There are several silly problems to this part. First, why are the wombbursters fully Alien? Shouldn't they have been hybrid creatures? And secondly, since when do Aliens have the ability to lay an egg down the throat of a host? Everything about the Aliens' life cycle to date has said that the facehuggers lay the eggs, and not the full grown Aliens. Plus, since when can a single host give birth to multiple Aliens? Three wombbursters pop out of the woman's stomach, and up till now only one Alien has ever popped out of its host's body.

Also on the subject of the hybrid creature, why does it automatically side with the Aliens? It's half of each species, so why doesn't it fight on its own side? And why do the Aliens join with it? The movie may actually have had an element of interest had the hybrid fought both the Predator and the Aliens. The Pred and Aliens could have had to forge a temporary alliance to fight this larger and deadlier creature. The humans would still be in the way, only to bite the dust in between. I promised myself I wouldn't talk about how I would've written the movie, so I'm going to stop here on that thought.

Moving along, the army and its response are also bizarre. The best solution is to nuke the city and eliminate all survivors? I would hate to be a PR rep for the government and/or military to explain a.) why the city was nuked in the first place; b.) why nuking it was the only possibly solution; and c.) why the American public should trust the government and military in the future. Plus, what about the Colorado state government? I'm sure the governor wouldn't be too happy if the army stepped in and said, "Yeah, there's something going on in your small town of Garrison, and we want to nuke the city and wipe out any evidence of what's happening." If I'm said governor, my response is, "Say WHAT??!?!?!"

Plus, the so-called "resolution" to nuking the city is very odd. Dallas questions the military with a weaker version of my aforementioned question, and the soldier's response is simply, "We were following orders." Dallas then shrugs it off to attend to his injured brother. So the army kills every living thing in the city, and we move right along. Riiiiiiiight.

Plus, just what happens to Dallas, Kelly, et al? Do they go on with their lives? I can't imagine the military just lets them move along, but then with the logic in this movie I doubt the writers even thought of that.

There's so many more points that made my head spin, but many of them are much more nitpicky than what I discussed here. I think AVP-R's faults lie not so much with the Strause brothers' directing (though it didn't help) but with the writing. The dialogue was beyond silly, the plot had absolutely no thought or logic, and the characters were not interesting in the slightest. The production values showed no effort either. The movie looked like it should've gone direct to video, and Fox wouldn't have had to spend so much money promoting the movie or sending it to theaters. The only good thing I found in the movie is Brian Tyler's score, and he did score the hell outta it. I liked that he chose to include Alan Silvestri's tribal drum beat for the Predator, and I think his score overall was one of the better scores between both franchises.

If you actually read this far through my review, I suggest you find a new way to spend your time. :-) (I'm poking more fun at myself when I say that than anything else - so don't flame me for that) And if you choose to send any response along the lines of "Dude it's just a movie" that's fine, but I want a movie that makes me care about the characters. AVP-R is a creature feature, and the previous movies in those franchises didn't feel so cheap. There's nothing about it that sets it apart from the likes of the Friday the 13th or Freddy Kruger movies, and that's a real travesty. Don't worry though - I don't plan on seeing any more AVP movies if they're made.

NO offense, but this should be in the reviews section.

Or is that not working? I am reading your review now. One sec please...........

10 secs later and done!

Ok. Here are my thoughts, first SPOILERS should go at the TOP of the review. Not the Middle.

Now, moving on. Yes, there are some interesting things that make no real sense in the movie. But does it make the movie worse than the first movie? AVP was even more over the top ridiculous. Predators helps Human kind? They used humans to breed aliens and then fight them? What? Seriously? The Chestbusters gestate in five seconds? The pyramids have a jenga moving mechanism? Something that HELPS the humans? So much more idiocy in the first movie than the second. But onto the second.

YES! the "Wombbusters" (no you did not coin that, it has been used even before the movie release)shiold be a HYBRID. Not pure aliens. The thing is, anderson (the first movies idiot director) what something cool at the end of AVP. The Predalien was for shock value and the studio loved it. So they had to include it in the sequel. In fact the Predalien was suppose to die EARLY in the film, but nooooooo....the powers that be wanted it as the "MAIN" Villian. First off, I have a huge problem with the predlien. If the aliens are supposed to "look" like their hosts (which they did not do in ALIEN and ALIENS)why didn't some aliens look like the space jockey? I mean seriously, it is ridiculous! As for 'Wolf' getting to planet earth FAST, it could hav ea warp speed capable ship. That is not hard to imagine, I mean we are watching a movie about an intelligent species that likes to hunt other alien species on other planets, yet you are mad because his ship can travel fast speeds? the whole egg laying thing again is just irritating regarding the predalien. it makes me mad. they have to change and add something new. I hate the hybrid concept. I really do! As for Nuking the city, that is the actual course of action when something of this magnitude presents itself. Trust me, I know. Honestly, I enjoyed this movie as it really did a great job of mixing the Aliens and Predator movie. The Music, the sounds and even when the army tank was driving we got the music from the marines in Aliens. It was nice...the brothers did their best with what they had. now they can make a great movie set in outer space with marines. HOPEFULLY set in the future!

I had tried posting this under the review section, but I wasn't able to properly post it there. I'll keep at it, because you are right that this belongs in that category and not under blogs. Plus, I really don't like that my paragraph breaks weren't included when I had publised this last night. The blog probably looks very annoying to read as one huge paragraph when I had written several smaller paragraphs.

I think my comment about how quickly Wolf reached Earth sounded like a bigger deal than it was. It was one of those "Hmm...that's odd" moments, and not nearly as ridiculous as the hybrid laying eggs in a woman and full Aliens burst out.

Here's another thought: did you find the makeup on the Aliens to be very cheap looking? They just looked...different than they did in previous films. I can't quite put my finger on what was changed, but they seemed to move differently and their mouths looked odd. Just an observation.

Oh, and I know I'm not clever enough to coin a term like "wombbursters." :-) I do seem to remember reading that term elsewhere before having seen the movie.

And you know, there's something else odd about the wombbursters: how did they take over the baby (or babies) inside the woman's womb so quickly? The babies were nearly nine months along, so it would stand to reason for the Aliens to pop out they would need to be injested in the babies. Oh the hell with it, the movie sucked. :-)

Both of those movies were a travesty. This newest one was laughably horrible (the other just being horrible). They ignored all previous movie "logic" in reference to the Alien movies. Its like the brothers retard, oops, I mean Strause said "we're going to do this, this and this," and someone pointed out the flaws based on previous movies and their reply was "F it". They bastardized and butchered both franchises, but because someone with abolutely NO expections enjoys it just because they see an Alien and Predator on the screen they get away with it... It's movielemming syndrome. As rgtchtiger said above and I said in another thread... they've turned the 2 series into the equivalent of Friday13, Nightmare, Halloween mindless empty crap and will continue to ruin them until they don't make money... Then they'll be AlienVSPredatorVSHellraiser or something as stupid... then a "Reboot". The suits have it and are ruining it.

I agree with you guys, this movie just wasnt up to par. I mean its started stupidly already at the beginning of the movie. What Predator would design a ship that would easily be destroyed or damaged from the inside. Second, if they were really worried about contamination wouldnt their logic dictate that they not land or crash land on an already populated planet. Especially one they seem to frequent in hunting humans? It would have saved a lot of time and hard ache for the Pred that came after them. Why cause last I heard Alien dont know how to drive starship's. Then again knowing these writers they would have probably said hey this is a hybrid Alien and Pred why cant he drive a starship? I'm also peeved about the chestburster to alien gestation period, they are way too fast.
The Hybrid impregnating through the mouth thats just lame for the two species. I dont think the Pred's compulate with the mouth and neither does the Alien thus neither should have that capability. Didnt the Director ever watcha a Pred or Alien movie? We all know that the Alien can take on certain features or functionality of the host but this Oral bredding crap makes no god damn sense. On another note I'm still a little angry that humans know about the Aliens. I said it many times before and I will say it again. Aliens are not to have been witnessed until the time of Ellen Ripley. Didnt they get that through their freakin skulls? They said they were fans of the franchise yet they totally let that one go over their heads.

you know whats strange? i would have actually LIKED AvP:R if I could see anything. I noticed something was wrong when the predator was always back-lit and there were NO lights in front of him, so he's always in siloette black, the aliens are almost entirely black as it is, but in this film you never get a decent look at them. Then I noticed something strange on the DVD, after watching the movie, I watched the redband trailer, it seems that the redband trailer has the color contrast and brightness adjusted while the movie does not.

Watch the scene when they discover the skinned cop in the tree, watch the redband trailer then watch that scene in the movie, the scene from the movie is much darker than the trailer (you can clearly see the tree as the camera pans up it and away from the central actors. I noticed that in the entire redband trailer, the action scenes containing the pred-Alien have the contrast and color correction adjusted so that is easier to see what is going on, in the movie thats not the case, the scenes have not been color/contrast corrected and are too dark to properly see the action.

other than this, and the logic flaws, I enjoyed it better than the first one but i wont be adding it to my collection any time soon.

also the facehuggers dont lay the eggs, the Alien-queen lays the eggs, they hatch andbecome the facehuggers that chestburst out a tiny alien that grows to full size..
of course your seeing it better than i am, i couldnt even see anything that you described... I may have to re-rent it and adjust my TV brightness / contract settings just to make out any of the details.
