The special make up effects wizard, Rick Baker, is ready to get back into the werewolf genre according to Ryan Rotten over at Shock Til You Drop. The Fx master behind American Werewolf in London & special consultant for Howling is heading back to his props department for a new horror remake, THE WOLFMAN, which stars actor Benicio Del Toro as the cursed lycanthrope. The story is based on the 1941 original which starred Lon Chaney Jr. Shooting for this Universal  film is set to begin in December by director Mark Romanek.

Plot Concept: The remake will be set in Victorian England. Del Toro will play a man who returns from America to his ancestral homeland, gets bitten by a werewolf and begins a hairy moonlight existence.

THE WOLFMAN hits theaters everywhere November 14, 2008.

this is certainly good news!!!
Lets hope that the entire werewolf genre hasnt been completely destroyed by the hordes of direct to DVD schlock B-movies that came after American Werewolf in London.. very few werewolf movies come close to hitting the mark squarely on the head after AWIL, only Dog Soldiers and Ginger Snaps (and its sequels) are the best of the current Were-crop that I can think of.

i agree, without mention van helsing....! the worth ! Dog soldiers was one of the best recently...I would like the atmosphere of the opening scene of Hellboy...

I'm looking forward to this film because I respect Benicio Del Toro. Adding Rick Baker to a werewolf movie is of course icing on the cake..

But....

I really cannot believe that Universal is releasing "The Wolfman" on November 14, 2008.

It just doesn't strike me as a "wise" move to release this film a week after James Bond 22 hits theaters and a week before Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince hits theaters...

This is terrific news! With Del Toro in the lead role and creature effects by Baker, this is already a must see for me and it hasn't even gone in front of the cameras. I agree with exfan that a mood similar to the beginning of Hellboy would be great.

Re: #4 - There were movies released week after week this summer and none of the big boys suffered too much - I imagine all the little guys did, though. Still, I would think they'd want to release it at least as early as mid october to capitalize on the Halloween season.

Being an avid fan of the original Universal monster movies, I naturally cringe at the thought of a remake of any of them ("The Mummy" was good but had nothing to do with the Karloff film; and "Van Helsing".. well, was a friggin mess...). But I have heard Del Toro is truly a old time monster movie fan and so hopefully this will not become a gory slashfest with little or no resemblence to the story of Larry Talbot and how he came to be The Wolfman!

The Wolfman is one of my all time favorite films. Del Toro teamed up with Rick Baker and Sir Anthony Hopkins...Holy shit does this have the making of a great remake !!! Let's just hope Mr.Baker doesn't create the Wolfman make-up f/x like the werewolves in the movie Wolf...

I could be wrong but didn't Rob Bottin create the effects for The Howling?
