It seems our resident curmudgeon has an admirer. What will Luciano do?

What They Say

Italy, Rome. When she was a child, Nicoletta was taken in by her grandmother so that her mother could remarry. Now grown up, she leaves everything in the countryside behind to visit her mother and her mother's second husband, a restaurant owner. To her surprise, her stepfather did not know his wife had a daughter!

A restaurant she had previously visited, Casetta dell'orso is hosted by a cast of dreamy, cool gentlemen who all happen to wear glasses. This curious restaurant's staff include cameriere (waiters) Claudio, Luciano, and Vito, GiGi the sommelier, and chefs Furio and Teo. Because women find the staff so enchanting, business is bustling and reservations are extremely hard to come by at this little Roman treasure.

Amongst all this, Nicoletta decides, on a whim, to work at the restaurant. Gradually, she begins to become interested in one of the gentlemen...

Delicious food and dreamy gentlemen await at the Ristorante Casetta dell'orso. For everyone who works there, a tender connection to the hearts of each visitor is spun, and the curtain raises on a story about these first-rate Italian gentlemen in spectacles.

Episode 10: Secret Love

Apparently the rough and gruff Luciano has an admirer: the sophisticated widow Savina, who invites him to a classical music concert. Luciano being Luciano, he firmly, but politely, declines. As we know, he still has strong feelings for his late wife, and does not think about wanting any other to take her place.

In the meantime, Claudio happens to run into his ex-wife Gabrielle and then shares a cup of coffee with her at her place. For Claudio, however, the reunion turns out to be a bit painful, as it reminds him too much of the past and what he has lost. At the restaurant the next day, Nicoletta and even Gigi both notice that Claudio seems depressed.

The concert comes and Luciano goes (of course, he was going to go anyway since his daughter was one of the performers in the concert). Upon meeting Savina again, who is very interested in him still, it then gets revealed that Savina is not a widow after all. She's just looking for a fling.

So much for romance among the older set.

As we head into the finale (next will be the final episode), it looks like we will see whether Claudio will be able to move beyond his failed relationship with Gabrielle, or will he be trapped in that emotional cul de sac forever?

In Summary:

Though Luciano is the ostensible focus of attention this time, the more interesting segment is Claudio's brief reunion with his ex-wife. We see that things are finally headed for a decision point for Claudio: does he move on or does he stay trapped in the past? We'll find out next episode, perhaps. For those who enjoy slice of life shows with complex characters, you should be interested in seeing that finale. If you're not, then I suspect you stopped watching some time ago, and will find no need to start again now.
