Guy Ritchie dropping Lobo in favor of Sherlock Holmes sequel.

With Avatar dominating the box office for the last month, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes has never touched the 1st place spot. But Warner Bros. Pictures must like what they see with the film's current cume of $191.5 million ($388.5 mil worldwide) because the studio is moving forward with their planned sequel of the iconic detective.

The Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex reports the fast-tracking development of Sherlock Holmes 2 has forced director Guy Ritchie to drop his plans with bringing the DC Comics character Lobo to life (also a Warner Bros. production), according to producer Joel Silver.

"I don't think he's going to do it now," Silver said of Ritchie directing "Lobo." "The studio wants us and Guy to focus on making another 'Sherlock Holmes.' So I think we're going to be doing that. But we're seeing what happens with this. Everybody is analyzing everything. It's all kind of happening right now as we talk. 'Sherlock' is sitting at just about $400 million in worldwide gross and showing itself to be pretty effective and pretty strong. So we're trying to see if we can do something quickly with another 'Sherlock Holmes' movie. We have some ideas and some good story points."

When asked by the Times as to whether this means Ritchie is merely delaying Lobo or dropping it altogether, Silver guessed the latter.

"I would guess a dfferent director," said Silver, who is producing "Lobo" with Akiva Goldsman and Andrew Rona. "It's all happening at once now. Everybody is talking about everything .... It's an ongoing conversation. Downey loves the experience of playing Sherlock and would love to play him again, and I'd love to see him play it again. Jude and all of them will be back and it will be great."

The movie was... . okay..   so..  yeah..  if someone wants me to tag along with them to watch it in the theater I probably will..

I personally loved the first one...I think it's a real shame that it got as buried and ignored as it did.  Thought they managed to pull off the action movie without completely raping the character, and they left a great lead in for a second movie...and Mark Strong as the villain was great...I've liked him ever since I saw "Stardust"...anybody else think he bears a resemblence to DeNiro, circa Taxi Driver days?

Next to the awesomeness that is AVATAR this movie just paled in comparison. They should've waited about a month or 2 after AVATAR to release this. Not that they're the same genre but AVATAR just casts a huge shadow and that shadow engulfed Holmes this time around

Ditto kimbroo's comment. But I'd be totally ok if they didn't do another and hope WB gets someone else on Lobo or better yet move on to some of their core characters and forget this D lister for now

I'd agree with that, wiseguy...shouldn't have gone up against the powerhouse.  If they could have somehow been merged into one glorious movie, that would have been great...Avatar bringing the special effects and Holmes bringing a (IMO) bit more stimulating plot.  I know the plot and symbolism of Avatar is important and a good message, but still found it pretty heavy handed...but it did make me want to be a 15 foot tall cat person who controls nature!  lol

I have not seen either film (Yeah, I know!) but to me Lobo isn't a character that deserves his own film. He's comic relief.  No matter how bad Holmes is or is not, I think this was a smart move by Ritchie...

Liked Holmes. It was much much more than the 250 million dollar spectacle remake of Ferngully (I don't care what anyone says, it was, and I saw Ferngully when it opened too.) I'd be up for second outing. Avatar was not that good... Really. In fact it was borderline awful, just like Titanic, but hey... It had a catchy gimmick, and tons of free marketing by a naive press. I will admit that I enjoyed the gimmick of 3D too, but James Cameron did not invent it. If given the choice I'd much rather see better acting, better scripts, and less juvenile pandering. Sherlock Holmes delivered, and was done for far less money too. Guy Ritchie has shown some growth in his craft. I hope he can proove that lighting can strike twice.

What about The Real RockNRolla? Loved the first one.

Gee, Muenster, don't hold back. Say what you really think about Avatar :)

Whether you like the movie or not, it has obviously touched something in the majority of moviegoers around the world. Even people who don't usually go to the movies have gone to see it. You could say an initial shot of a heavy promotional campaign got the ball rolling, but as we've seen with numerous ad blitz made for "the next big event movie" this can only work so far or even not at all. Something about this movie has gone plaid (to use the Spaceballs term), causing multiple viewings and sustained interest from all kinds of people.Like Cameron's Titanic or Lucas' Star Wars, it is the right idea at the right time executed in the right way.

"It's a kinda magic."

I really couldn't care less about a Lobo movie. I loved the sherlock holmes movie. I thought it was done very well and I am looking forward to the next one.

Liked the first, will be there for part 2. I think all things considered Holmes did very well against Avatar. 400 million is not nothing.

Oh and even though this is a story about "Sherlock Holmes" I just have to say "Avatar" sucks. I didn't like it, but most people do, and its making money hand over fist, that sucks. The story was awful, why couldn't they tell it backwards like Momento that would have made it so much more interesting, or have the Na'vi defusing bombs in Iraq now you have a movie. The acting was terrible everyone in this movie needs to watch Rachel McAdams in "Sherlock Holmes" to get a real sense of what great actors can do. I'd rather listen to someone read good book than have to sit though an amazing visual spectical in that gimmicky 3D, it will never catch on, like color picture and CG F/X. If I had my way well we'd still be listening to the radio, picture is over rated.
