Some photos of the race car going up against Mach 5 in Speed Racer have appeared online courtesy of Rocket Punch. The car was featured at the Tokyo Auto Salon and someone was on hand to snap some photos. The real life Japan-based racing team Autobacs Racing Team Aguri is the team whose duties are to beat "Speed" in the film as well. The pics of this car in the link below has the actual number and racing colors of that team.

Larry and Andy Wachowski penned the screenplay and directed the adaptation of the 60's anime. The film stars Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, Hiroyuki Sanada, Richard Roundtree, Ji Hoon Jung, Benno Furmann, Kick Gurry, Paulie Litt and Roger Allam.

Plot Summary: Born to race cars, Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is aggressive, instinctive and, most of all, fearless. His only real competition is the memory of the brother he idolized—the legendary Rex Racer, whose death in a race has left behind a legacy that Speed is driven to fulfill. Speed is loyal to the family racing business, led by his father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), the designer of Speed’s thundering Mach 5. When Speed turns down a lucrative and tempting offer from Royalton Industries, he not only infuriates the company’s maniacal owner (Roger Allam) but uncovers a terrible secret—some of the biggest races are being fixed by a handful of ruthless moguls who manipulate the top drivers to boost profits.

If Speed won’t drive for Royalton, Royalton will see to it that the Mach 5 never crosses another finish line. The only way for Speed to save his family’s business and the sport he loves is to beat Royalton at his own game. With the support of his family and his loyal girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), Speed teams with his one-time rival—the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox)—to win the race that had taken his brother’s life: the death-defying, cross-country rally known as The Crucible.

Speed Racer will hit theaters May 9, 2008.

*Ahem* (cue John Candy voice from Spaceballs): IT'S A TRANSFORMER- - !
Wow Speed Racer is about an evil corporate sponsor? Those decals on the car are so pivotal. I learned that from Pixar's Cars.

I'm yet to be impressed by anything I've seen so far from this movie. The only thing giving this movie any weight in my opinion are the Wachowskis.

I agree WISEGUY562. Even with the Wachowskis attached, the trailer and the story make me flinch. I am not impressed with this movie. I fail to see how this will be a smash in theaters, regardless of the fan base.

This may be one of those movies that ends up better than expected. I'm sure the action and fx will be good. A good popcorn movie at least.

Wiseguy...I'm not sure I understand your thoughts about this movie...You say you do not like anything you have seen in the trailer and so on and that is cool but you say the Wachowskis are the ones that give this movie any weight, they must not have that much weight invested into this flick if you have not seen anything you like so far...
I have to say they have taken the look of speed to another level or place if you will and if feels kinda foreign to me, not like what I envisioned it in my own mind but they rarely are...Am I the only one that believes that some comic books and cartoons are just the blue prints for the foundation for a movie and as long as the essence or the spirit of the story and characters are intact then change some things if not allot of things? My point being, I do not want to watch a live action version of speed racer if it is going to mimic the cartoon in look, feel and everything the early 80's had to offer up, I don't remember speed racer being so neon and bright with colors which is why I was happy to see that the X-Men dropped those ugly yellow spandex costumes for the black leather...I rambled on enough but I think I made some kinda insignificant point lol...Anyway

It will be interesting to see how much money this thing makes. This cartoon was out of date when I was a kid and I thought it sucked. Does the 15-30 year old crowd out there now even have an idea what the heck speed racer is? All I remember about it is some bad animation and the driver had a monkey (insert jokes here). I don't agree with you guys about Wachowskis, yeah we know the name but Matrix 2 and 3 sucked, V for Vendetta was okay, so they need a hit and soon...don't know if this one will give it to them.

Can't wait for this movie! Hope they have a great theme song and not hip hop shit.

mlaforcer, the reason I give the Wachowskis a benefit of doubt is because of The Matrix. Sure, nothing since has even come close to being as good, but that movie impressed me so much that I continue to give them some respect in the same way I look at Peter Jackson after LOTR. He may never make another movie nearly as good, but that alone gave him enough good will for a very long time. By the way I loved King Kong so he gets an even longer extension.

Im ready for this movie. I was a huge fan of the cartoon and looks like they've done a great job with it.

It will be fun and worth the price of admission.
