There were few surprises when the final box office amounts were tallied for the weekend. As expected RULES OF ENGAGEMENT and ERIN BROKOVICH occupied the #1 and #2 slots, and the highest ranking science fiction, horror, or fantasy film was ROAD TO EL DORADO, which earned $9.09-million, bringing its total after ten days in release to $25.12-million. The weekend take was actually nearly $1-million above yesterday's estimates, so the film may have a slightly longer box office journey than expected.
Also in the Top 10 were FINAL DESTINATION, in 9th with $3.84-million (total to date: $33.90-million) and AMERICAN BEAUTY in 10th with $3.35-million. The latter film's total now stands at an impressive $121.64-million. The other two genre films to earn over $1-million during the weekend were MISSION TO MARS, which dropped to 12th place, adding $1.56-million to its cume of $57.00-million, and FANTASIA 2000, in 13th place, which took in $1.30-million, bringing its total up to $40.21-million. The only other 'milestone' of note was that DreamWorks GALAXY QUEST crept past the $70-million mark.
