Robin Williams as Joker in BATMAN BEGINS 2?

In a recent interview with IGN, Robin Williams talked about the possibility of playing Joker in Batman Begins 2. While it is all speculation and the role is yet to be cast, it was an interesting interview.

Favorites for the role have not previously included Robin Williams name, but he does have ties with director Christopher Nolan. As such I wouldn't quite rule out the possibility, just take the news with a grain of salt.

Some interesting quotes from the IGN interview:

"Oh God, I'd love to do that one," Williams said regarding playing the Joker.

Williams is famous for his Jack Nicholson impression, but he suspects Nolan would be looking for a new take. "Well, you want to do a different Joker. You know, if they do Arkham Asylum, it would be amazing. Arkham Asylum is one of the greatest, nastiest comic books ever. It's truly, it's like the Marquee de Sade on that level, and wonderfully damaged and quite tragic, in terms of when you realize [what happened to] create these characters..."

Other actors mentioned as possibilities were Adrian Brody or Paul Bettany. While it seems Bettany was looked into regarding the part, news suggests that it is unlikely he will get the role.

The rumors of Williams as a Batman villain goes clear back to the Tim Burton films, except back then the rumor was that he would play the Riddler (since the Joker had already been cast). I would prefer that the new series of Batman movies avoids this sort of stunt casting - Bettany or Brody would be better choices for Joker IMHO.

Actually, Williams was originally cast as the Joker for Burton's batman. He pulled out and Jack took the role. Personally, Brody would work, Bettany doesn't seem to have it in him from appearances so far. Oh, and Ponyboy, have you seen any of Williams' darker work? Insomnia or One Hour Photo for instance? He does dark very well. The only thing I would question at this point is actually whether he has the physicality for the role.

Robin always plays the same wild doofus when that's the type of role he's playing. I'm tired of his comedy, though I think he is a great actor in drama.

Actually Williams was not cast as the Joker in the Tim Burton movies. Here is the story. Tim Burton wanted Jack Nicholson from the get go but Jack was making crazy demands and also dragging his feet, because he was unsure if he wanted to do this film. Tim Burton got ticked and started negiotiating with Robin Williams. Nicholson heard and decided to sign on for the film and Warner Bros stopped talking to Williams even though he was more interested in the part than Nicholson was at the time. That pissed off Robin Williams so much that when Joel Shummacker (the smuck!) asked him to be Riddler in Batman Forever he turned them down flat. And that folks is the true hollywood story! Also I think Paul Betteney or Stuart Townsend would make a great Joker.

I think Crispin Glover would be great, but I would love Mark Hammill he totally nailed the voice and persona of the Joker.

I still love Burton's first Batman movie (was never a big fan of his second one), but I have to agree that compared to Nolan's movie, even the Burton movies appear dated and somewhat campy. However, I think Burton still deserves credit for taking the Batman franchise forward. At the time the first Batman movie was made, the Adam West TV show was still the image of Batman best known in the public's eye. Burton's darker vision was a big stride in the right direction.

I can watch the 2nd film over and over again... probably because it is the darkest of the 1st four films (Batman fails a couple of times). I hated DeVito, but his take actually has grown on me over the years, everyone else in the film is just on target dark and macabe.

Has anyone thought of Marilyn Manson to play the Joker? Since the new Batman is much darker, I think Manson would be perfect! He already has the white face, big creepy red smile, and just dye his hair green and you have the Joker! What do ya guys think?

This is an old story. Williams talked about this weeks ago. I'm not sure how he'd do in the role. Whoever Nolan gets, I'm sure he'll be fine. After Batman Begins, I completely trust his judgment. At least in casting the male roles. Katie Holmes was just weak as Rachel. Not bad, just not up to par with the men in the film.

See I think that Hamill would be too old (although a good choice) it seems that they may want a villian within the same age range of Bale. I just hope they dont do the Two-villian thing. I would rather see Joker and Bats sqaure off without having to devote screen time to a third actor.
