Robocop with Penn and Norton?

Casting Update

Jose Padilha’s Robocop has been the subject of some recent pre-production PR gaffes, such as lead actor Joel Kinnaman telling MTV to expect this Robocop to be “more human” and that “you’re going to see his eyes.” While such changes might prove not to be so misguided in the context of the final film, the general idea of such a daringly classic film being remade in today’s studio environment has many fans of the original concerned. How can they possibly hope to match the original? While we won’t know the answer until we see the film, it’s a nice surprise to hear that there’s actually a pretty great supporting cast being considered.
While no deals have been reported as being finalized – we’re getting word that Edward Norton (Fight Club, The Bourne Legacy), Sean Penn (Mystic River, Milk), Rebecca Hall (The Town) and Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien) are being considered for roles. Norton, if cast, would actually be playing “Norton” – a key scientist behind the RoboCop program. Bernal would be playing Murphy’s former partner who begins hooking up with Hall (Murphy’s “widow”) after they both think he’s dead. Ouch! Penn is being considered for the role of “Novack”, a highly political right wing reporter.
Norton in particular is known for not being shy when it comes to tussling with studios over the quality of the product, if he is indeed cast hopefully he can be the type of creative heavy that keeps this thing from going totally off the rails.
Strike Entertainment partners Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing. Josh Zetumer wrote the script. Joel Kinnaman is in the lead role originated by Peter Weller. Sony will distribute the MGM film.

RoboCop will be released on August 9th, 2013.

Sean Penn? Doesn't strike me as his cup of tea, but what do I know.

Wiseguy 4/15/2012 7:03:28 AM

Agree Chopsaki but he may love the idea just to ridicule the "right"

And Norton? I'd never hire this guy unless we agree to boundaries right off the bat. I don't give a shit who he is and despite everything he isn't a big draw like some other stars

Agree Wiseguy.  I like Ed Nortan quite a bit. However, there has not been a movie made with him in that I say "Ed Nortan is in this? I MUST see it!"

To be honest, not too many actors/actresses have that impact on me these days.

Is Will Smith gonna play Robocop and Jaden Smith Mini-Robocop?

I just watched the original. Sorry - but we do need another one. That was cheesy as all hell. Entertaining but cheesy and the special effects compared to now are Jason and the Argonauts bad. Funny they didn't look like that when I was a kid.

Mr JBE- normally I would have said "blasphemy" but I totally know where you're coming from since I just watched total recall again recently and had the same reaction. I remember it being much more intense, well-paced, and not so cheesy when I was a kid. But Arnold sure did carry that movie...

MrJBE and violator:  Hush your mouths!

I recently purchased Robocop on blu ray, and I'll be damned if that shit didn't blow mind all over again!  As for Total Recall, I agree.  I also recently purchased that blu ray and felt the same way.

The only special effects I can think of that really might be cheesy were the ED-209 effects.  The rest were mostly actually makeup effects.  But with all the remakes these days of movies that are even older and have even cheesier effects, and people raise hell about those being remade/rebooted because of their classic nature, I guess I just don't understand these arguments.  Even though I believe Robocop should be left alone.  In fact, I predict a major flop for this remake.  Like Footloose remake floppage style.

Did any of that make sense?  Because it did in my head.

Loved the first series ... hope this is just as good

MrJawbreakingEquilibrium 4/15/2012 5:31:55 PM

Oh - it wasn't only the effects that were cheesy. It was the acting and story.

I am not against ANY remake for the reason you guys have stated. While it is true that some movies hold up well to the test of time, a good amount of them feel outdated very quickly, even beloved childhood movies....Total Recall was my FAVORITE movie as a tween, but I am so pumped for thie remake....I feel the same way about Robocop as well....Hell, i love all remakes,,,,remake everything becuse even I do love the orignal, I may get a new version of a movie that is great as well, and if not...who gives a fuck, I still have the original to watch over and over again.
