With the comic book based movie "The Losers" about to hit, the film's director is talking about other things that he'd like to hit up in the years to come. In talking with MTV's Splash Page while promoting The Losers, White talked about a project that's been in discussion hell for years with a lot of interest but has never made it to the greenlit stage yet for a number of reasons.
"Well, ['Robotech' is] not a project that's greenlit," related White during an appearance at last weekend's WonderCon (via Sci-Fi Wire). "It's a great cult series. When it came out, I actually saw it in France, growing up. I saw it in French. It's a pretty amazing cartoon. And I'm hoping it's going to come to fruition."
"I read a draft that's really good," continued White. "I'm interested in doing it, but the project is not fast tracked or anything like that, so there's no official thing. There's no deal... They sent me a draft. I liked it. It's a work in progress."
Robotech has cropped up in Hollywood news for the last several years, generally riding on the CG wave created by Transformers as the two shows were tied together back in the 1980's because of the transformable robots and mecha angle. Harmony Gold, who owns the rights to the franchise, has created one new animated show in the last few years and has talked about doing more while also pursuing the elusive Hollywood goal. Some of the more interesting news items that came out in the last few years was seeing Tobey Maguire talk about it as well as having screenplay drafts written up by Lawrence Kasdan of Raiders of the Lost Ark fame as well as Smallville's producers Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The project currently has Tom Rob Smith as the the man behind the adaptation screenplay.
Honestly, I don't want this movie to happen. I love Robotech, and I love Super Dimensional Fortress Macross even more (which is the arc I'm sure the movie will be based on). I don't think it would be served well by being condensed down to a two hour format, and any movie would have to be self-contained because there's no guarantee that a Robotech film would do well enough to merit a sequel. Also, I have trouble imagining them securing the kind of budget to really do this film justice, SFX-wise. Unless they take it completely out of the country, like last year's District 9, which had incredible special effects on a fraction of the usual budget.
LOL at HG for the "this movie is not fast tracked or greenlit" comment blowing out the little PR steam they've been trying to press for the last 2 years.
