Robotech Vol. #01
By Christian Johansson
February 18, 2002
Release Date: June 19, 2001
Ah Robotech. The mecha, the characters, the corny dubbing. Those 3 lines can be said about a lot of shows but Robotech stands out as the mecha drama almost every anime fans has seen or at least heard about.
Audio: The audio is good considering that it's a 16 year old TV-series. But it has its flaws. The voices are clear but the music mostly sounds kinda dull.
Video: The quality isn't exactly top notch (sarcasm for those who can't detect it). There are many blotches here and there. And in some scenes (mostly on the bridge of Bretai's flagship) there's a ton of grain. But it's far from horrible and fully watchable.
Packaging: This is the only part of the DVD that I really liked. The front has a striking image of Rick's veritech pointing a finger at you whit some fighters and battlepods in the background. The back has a pic of Rick in his jumpsuit and 3 smaller pics, A shot of Bretai, Another shot of Rick, And an action shot of Roy Fokkers skull-1. ADV also used a white amaray case that really looks good IMO.
Menus: Nothing special here. There are some basic commands and what appears to be the preview for episode 2 showing in the background. Nothing wrong here but nothing special either. But what really bugs me is that every time you access the menu you have to watch a short scene were Exedore and Bretai comments on the Micronians resistance. What is the point of this? The scene isn't really relevant.
Extras: Well there are none so.....
Content: As most of you probably know Robotech is just the Americanized version of Macross and 2 other shows nobody really gives a crap about. Since AnimEigo are going to release the original Macross on DVD with superb quality some are probably asking, Why should I bother?
Well there's the fact that the discs are really cheap and have 6 episodes each while Macross is going for almost 10$ per episode. But that's about it if you aren't a fan. Robotech is one of those series you can only really love if you saw it when you were young. It's not a masterpiece but it has its charm.
The episodes on the first disc (Booby trap, Countdown, Space fold, The long wait, Transformation, Blitzkrieg) are pretty good but alot of them are just introduction. The whole disc feels almost like moving into a new apartment. But there is some good action here too. My only real problem is the heavy Minmei factor in "The long wait".
Pentium III computer whit Asus12x DVD, Belinea 45 cm monitor, And Akai AH302 headphones.
