What They Say
© ADV Films
After battling their way back to Earth, the crew of the SDF-1 must learn to cope with a new set of rules imposed by a bureaucracy with little understanding of the grave threat that faces the entire world.
Eventually, the horrors of war are brutally realized as heroes are forced to make the ultimate sacrifice.... Add to this the growing tensions, romantic and otherwise, between several key characters and therein lays the makings of classic science fiction melodrama that defines ROBOTECHThe Review!
With Robotech tearring up the video charts, this next release is obviously worth watching. This disc continues in the tradition.
Audio: Well, it's mono. In terms of originality, this is a strong point, but for those who spend hundreds of dollars on home theaters, it's kind of a let down. At any rate, it's a solid effort.
Video: As mentioned before, this too succeeds in originality. Lots of nicks and scratches from the orignal negatives are easily spotted on this disc. Theres even some noticable grain. But in terms of transfering, ADV did a great job. Not convinced? Watch the original tapes and you'll see what I mean.
Packaging: Yes! More beautiful artwork from the original Robotech novels. This time featuring a close up of a female Zentradi commando unit in combat with a veritech. The back features highly restored pictures from the episodes.
Extras: $15 for six episodes and you want extras? You people are picky.
Content: I hate to say this. This disc contains some of the more boring episodes of Robotech. Let me give you a run down of all the episodes.
Blue Wind (B): The SDF-1 makes a break for earth. Kyron trys to stop it, but Azonia interferes. As fun as this episode sounds, it's really not that big a battle and not that big of a return. It was cool to see the sunset though.
Gloval's Report (C): A recap of everything thus far with about 50 seconds of new footage. The worst episodes on the disc.
Homecoming (B-): Minmei visits her folks while Lisa and Gloval give their report. We also meet Lynn Kyle. An okay episode, but too much Minmei.
Battle Cry (A): This is the only episode on the disc that is worth noting. When Kyle, Rick and Minmei return to the ship, Kyron launches a suprise attack on the SDF-1. The best scene in the battle is when Rick trys to get up in his veritech while other soldiers are fighting furiusly in the backround. Nice!
Phantasm (C+): Rick is in the hospital and has a weird nightmare. More of an alternative story.
Goodbye Big Brother (B+): Minmei prepares for her first movie while Myria engages Max and Roy gets hit for the worst.
Overall, not the highlight of Robotech, but still an ok volume. If you've come this far, why stop now? The series is just starting to get good and will get even better later on.
