Rock Opera Revival

The government of Japan is considering their child pornography law to include anime and manga. Of all the new porn anime titles released, about half feature sex acts involving schoolgirls. It's a touchy subject, since some argue that drawings don't have any specific age they're just lines on paper and there's no victim to protect. On the other hand, police suggest that there are links between violent anime porn and the rise in violent crimes against children, with at least one killer testifying that kid porn anime put ideas in his head that he subsequently acted on. I don't know if you can legislate the issue of citizens' personal private fantasy, but I do feel that the apparent obsession of Japanese men with fantasies (and worse) about underage girls (and rape) is unhealthy. And for those with an interest in animation as an art form, and Japanese anime in particular, it's long been a source of embarrassment and annoyance that so many films and TV series are fixated on looking up the skirts of little girls. It's gotten so that even more serious stories about girls such as the films of Hayao Miyazaki can't pass without raising a few eyebrows.

To change subjects entirely, debuting this week on Cartoon Network is an all-new series created by cartoonist and former REAL WORLD housemate Judd Winick. THE LIFE & TIMES OF JUNIPER LEE is about a super-powered 11-year-old girl is Earth's Protector against supernatural monsters. Looks mighty cute!

(O) GANTZ Volume 5: Process of Elimination (ADV) In Round 2, the players are provided with battlesuits and powerful weapons to battle another wave of alien killers.

The way I see it, it's a fantasy, pure and simple, and one that I'm not afraid to admit I indulge in. Please don't group in child molesters with fans of this subject matter.

Yes, I find anime, hentai and manga titillating. No, I would never, EVER, harm a child in any way shape or form, either directlyor indirectly, and I'm tired of people thinking that folks who like this kind of stuff are all pedophiles.

I think the issue they're worrying about is not that some of the amime, et cetera, are designed purely for pedophilia, it's that it can unduly influence those who have that one wire blown to cross the line and act, just as Brian pointed out above.

Yeah, it is just lines on paper and, yes, most people are not pedophiles, but if even one child is harmed because one guy liked some schoolgirl anime a little too much, then it's something to consider.

Following that logic, violent movies, videogames, and music should be considered for banning. Now I know, people are trying to do just that, but the majority of us know that that is frickin ludicrous.

Same issue here, in my humble oppinion. It's not the material, it's the individual.

Right on Grim. I'm sick and tired of people telling me what I watch on tv in some way dictates my behavior. If that was the case I'd be building things like MacGyver, transforming into a car like a Transformer, hitting people over the head with mallets like Tom hitting Jerry, or something else ridiculous. Tv is entertainment and believe it or not some people like seeing little schoolgirls, who are drawn to look more like supermodels than children, in sexual situations.

Should we take away these people's little slice of entertainment of course not. Instead of wasting time on censorship which never works, it always increases the want for what's censored, why don't we put that time, money, and force into finding these people before they strike. Besides I'd be pissed if after they take away these guy's animated porn for all intents and purposes, they come after my real honest to god porn.

There's also something that's been highlighted as the main reason for this censorship - that is, it encourages anti-social or even criminal behaviour - which has a flip side. Drawing conclusions from the aforementioned theory, it follows that this form of entertainment is a release for some people. Given that, what could the result be if we took that away, and where would they turn to get their 'fix'? Just a side-effect which bears consideration, I think.
